hi, does anyone familiar with SB rod Part #s know what i should have here?

I have just pulled down a 318, it was a late model replacement engine (cast 1984 and assembled 1993) and the rods are part # 3418645 (pressed pin and cast crank)

The 1971 340 i have just pulled apart has the same part number rods but full floating pins as 340's do. It is a forged steel crank engine.

I have another set of 340 rods (full floating) i bought off ebay, along with another set of 318 rods, they are all the same 3418645 part number.

i thought that 340 had a heavier rod with a different part number? I know the 360 does.

Anyone with a book that tells what the part numbers should be for which engine, or if they changed through the years?

Thanks,

after 1974 all 318 ran the heavy duty rods, 645 being one of the forging numbers. maybe someone will scan the page in the MP book (pg 107) and post it.

Yr, engine, pin type, part number, forging number
64-71, 273/318, Floating, 2406785, 1518699
72-73, 318, Floating, 2899495, 2899496
74-86, 318, Pressed, 3751015, 3418645
68-73, 340, Floating, 2899495, 2899496
71-86, 360, Pressed, 3751015, 3418645

The first part number is the light duty rod. The others are HD. Hope this helps.

Pulled a set of bushed 645 rods out of a 72 318. After 71 with the introduction of the 360 Mopar gradually consolidated the different parts, and eventually they all got the same stuff.

I've pulled floating pin 645 rods out of numerous early 70's 340s. Just because the book says they should be one forging number, doesn't mean it's gospel.

Thanks to everyone who replied - i have the answer now! I think lilcuda summed it up the best: Nothing written is what you will get 100% of the time. But at least i know that the 645 is classed as a HD rod, and that plenty of 318 had them (especially later ones). Special thanks to 2 Darts for making that list which i have cut and pasted into my Info.

Years ago I bought a complete set of still in the box rods that were supposed to be 340 HD rods. Since this thread came up I took a look at the box Boxes have p/n 2899495. Rods have p/n 3418645. Now it has me scratching my head wondering just exactly what I have.

Toplscuda - that's a strange one -looks like parts in the wrong box, or a mixup (or dishonest? unless they were nos from a dealership). Well i think you definitely have the HD rods, the 645 were the heavier ones. But the 495 Part#...according to 2Darts list above, the 496 is the HD version of the 495. Someone else told me the 496 might be the DC (Direct Connection) race version. Too many numbers, all too confusing! There are some really nice light new rods available now, brand name EAGLE and SCAT I beam rods can be bought for around US$300 or less. I bought some SCAT rods from KMJ Performance from Ebay, Mancini has some Eagle I beams for under $300. Of course they are made in China, like almost everything now days, but they are name brand and the SCAT ones i bought are very well packaged, machined in USA and are all very light, about 100g lighter than the stock ones, weight matched with ARP2000 rod bolts ready to fit.
