Engine Ground wire?

4 guage,10 guage,1 guage,big difference there.Do you really need something as heavy as 4 or 1 guage?I think my ground wire is about 10 guage but it's cracked and I am having some issues with lights flickering,so I am looking to replace it.8) Sorry,I hope I'm staying on topic.
