Need help setting timing and carb
It may smell rich at idle because of the camshaft/compression combo. If you want to make it better, try idling it a little higher, by a couple hundred rpm or so (like to 800-850), and it should clear up the fuel smell. Also, make sure the air bleeds on the top of that Carter are clean. Hit them with the little red tube on a can of carb clean, blowing down thru them a bit. Also, since you have a vaccum gage, what is the reading? If it's too low, the step up springs in the carb may be adding fuel to the mix at idle. Too low a vaccum lets the power pistons get moved by the spring, instead of being held closed by vaccum. You can by the different springs based on vaccum reading at idle, in gear if auto.
