Prepping the 71 Scamp for paint

Well I was feeling ambitious yesterday and along with some basic engine checkup I got into the roof and upper body of the new car yesterday.

The roof is not great at all. It had a factory vinyl roof that obviously did not receive the same love as a hard top nor did it fare the years well; like most vinyl tops, it leaked.

The middle of the top of the roof looks like the surface of the moon, so far only 1 small pin hole on the roof but it feel real thin and flexy. I then proceeded to all the window trim molding, removing this was a bear of a job, I wanted to keep it in good shape. Surprisingly the window pockets were mostly real good, especially the windshield. The back window has a few issues in the bottom corners, the drivers side isn't too bad but the passenger side corner is rusted pretty bad - nothing that can't be fixed and may not even require a donor corner.

My plan was just to shoot the roof, and it still is, but along the way I decided to only primer the roof with a rust catalyzing primer and focus on getting the entire car into the booth in the next week or two just for uniform color during the build - besides driving around in flat black primer is cool no? I pulled all the trim off most of the car and will finish today but must shoot the roof mid-day when temps are warmest so I am off to go sane, clean and tape off the car, will post pics later.
