I bought a Ford!
Here's the deal. Earlier this year I bought a new trailer for my race car, a 30 foot enclosed trailer. Now my tow vehicle (a 96 Dodge 3500 club cab dually V10) handles this chore without even a whimper. The problem is getting the trailer into my backyard where it has to be stored. My truck is not a four wheel drive because quite frankly I didn't want one, and didn't think I needed one when I bought the truck. This being Florida the ground is nothing more than soft sand. Well trying to get 10,000 pounds of trailer backed through soft sand is a job my 2WD truck, even with the limited slip differential, just isn't cut out to do. So I need either a 4WD truck, another driveway (which the city won't let me do) or find a place to store my trailer off property.
So I've been looking for a cheap 4WD truck that is heavy enough to move the 10,000 pounds of trailer with 1,000 pounds of tongue weight. The only thing I've found is a '75 F250 4WD truck for $1000. It's a bit beat up and it needs some work but I don't care about that. The 4 speed granny gear transmission and the divorced transfer case are both New Process Gear units and the differentials are Dana's. So the driveline is good and it still works.
I'll use it just as a "yard dog" to pull the trailer out and put it back in when I'm done. My wife wasn't too keen on the idea of another vehicle around here (especially a Ford, she said. lol) but it will stay in the backyard on the other side of the trailer so it won't be seen from the house.
