can you guys decode this and tell me if its a good deal?

From looking at the pics I don't think it's an OD trans. To be sure, check the diameter of the front bearing retainer. OD trans should be 5 1/8" but there is a 4.8" bearing retainer that fits the larger OD trans case opening. Also, check that the front bearing retainer matches the size of the hole on the front of the trans case.

Not sure what you mean by a big first gear. If you mean a high numerical gear to make up for a low numerical rear end gear then I don't think this is what you want. I have too much time on my hands so I blew up the pics & counted gear teeth. Best I could find out is something like this.

1st 2.66 or 2.47
2nd 1.91 or 1.77
3rd 1.39 or 1.34
4th 1 to 1

This would be referred to as a "close ratio" transmission.

I think the price is way too high. A couple of years ago I bought a rebuilt A body 4 speed with similar ratios on eBay for $350. I have a book that says the 3.09 first was used from 64 to 66. If this is correct, the 66 transmissions would have a regular slip yoke on the rear because it's my understanding that the ball & trunion ended with the 65 models. fzmax is right about the OD trans having a 3.09 first gear. The gear ratios for the OD trans are as follows;

1st 3.09
2nd 1.67
3rd 1 to 1
4th 0.73

I wonder if the OD ratios might be good for a stroker because the torque provided by the long stroke could help overcome the wide ratio spread, but there's the issue of the OD trans durability being questionable in high HP situations. I read a magazine feature on a Superbird that was running an OD trans so I suppose a lot depends on how you use (or abuse) it.
