i am removing my box to have firm feel rebuild it. my question is,do i HAVE to knock loose the steering column to get the box out? i got the coupler pin out, just need to remove the box bolts and get it out.

You're gonna have to unbolt the column so you can pull back a little bit to disengage the splines on the coupler. Put something on the driver's seat that will support the steering wheel, that way you won't have to undo any wiring. It just needs to come back a few inches.

Yes . The column wont go up far enough to seperate the box coupling from the steering gear unless the column is unbolted. If this is a column shift car you should lower the shifter to neutral. To leave it in park will result in shifter linkage bind and stretch. Changes the adjustment of neutral safety switch etc... Put it in neutral and the column can move up and down as needed.

i'm trying to do the same thing with may 69 dart. i see the pin but i tried tapping it out but no luck. do i need to tap it out from a certain side only. i can see the head on one side and the other side looks like its deeper in the hole. what should i try?

I know I'm late Gus but turn your steering wheel so the pin side that's deeper in the hole is straight up. Spray some PB blaster in there. Find a bolt that's just big enough to drive the pin out and just small enough to go through the hole. After that just tap with a hammer and it'll work its way out.
