I am getting antsy. Everything is done with my 340 installation except the 904 trans kickdown/pressure linkage.
I want to start the engine; check for leaks, scare the neighbors, but I don't want to put pressure on the trans.
Can I start the engine in neutral so i don't prematurely cook the trans? I am not going to drive it.
Will the transmission be OK in D or N if I just start her up?

Why not start it in Park? You're not going to instantly fry the transmission by just letting it sit there idle while you check for leaks.

You want to put in the N so the tranny pump is pumping in P it will not pump.Did you fill your tourque convertor with oil befor you slid it in.Very inportant in my books to start up in N.That way you will see if there is any leaks.Good luck I will be lisening is she open headers.

Trans wont run the front pump in park so you wouldn't get accurate fluid level check or leak check. Doesn't answer your question does it ? First start in park, second start in neutral ? Surely someone has thoought this through...

To be safe, if you're gonna run it in neutral, put it up on some GOOD jackstands. Neutral is best due to the pump issue. You'll get the fluid hot and cirdulating so you can check level and be ready to go when you get linkage straightened out. Also when you're breaking in the cam and its running, check the fluid level, but don't add any until it gets warm. The fluid expands when its hot and you need to check it then.
