In the late 70's, two buddies and I were south on I-95, just below D.C. in my 70 Challenger R/T 383 4 spd. Factory gears were 3.91, I had a 2.93 in it for the road trip. I had just rebuilt the 383 and the tailpipes would get nice and gray on the road. A guy in a Mazda RX7 pulled up and commented on the gray pipes. He said it sounded good and mentioned that he had nothing on his radar detector. Good enough for this (then) 20 year old. I down shifted to 3rd, floored it, and we never saw him again! I didn't have the speedo gear for the 2.93, so I don't know how fast we were going, but I took 3rd up to about 5500 rpm, eased into 4th and backed down.
