Would like to know all the parts needed for a swap a 727 to A-833 on a 360w/ a 8 3/4. My car puts out around 425tq right now so I was also wondering about anything that would have to be bought to keep from blowing clutch/trans. I know a few things, but to make sure I have/know everything for the swap/build of the trans. Plus others may have the same questions. Thank you for your help in advance.

I just did this and can tell you from experience to check your pinion angle. I wheel hopped my car and tore up some gears. Make sure you have some good shocks and everything is tight around back and you should be fine.

Yeah I remember that happening. I was just wondering if I need a lakewood bellhousing, and I know I will need a aftermarket clutch. How hard was it to put your 4spd in? Would like to know the little parts needed to put a 4spd in. Thank you.

I'll take a stab at this since I swapped over to a 4spd. behind a 360 / 8.75....

First things first, get the correct flywheel for an EXTERNALLY balanced 360. They go for about $200-275 new. Use a stock 318-340 flywheel and you'll have an absolute horrible vibration, starting at 2,400 until your vision blurs.... :shaking:

Pick up a Dakota clutch pilot bearing. Check out the previous thread in this section on my questions about which one the get. Make sure that your crank is bored deep enough or you'll have to trim the tip of the transmissions input shaft. I don't have the exact depth, but it'll be at least 1.5" into the rear of the crank.

Aside from the obvious, a transmission and driveshaft, you'll need the bell housing and linkage. Make sure you match the front bearing retainer on the tranmission with the bell housing opening. There are 2-3 different sizes for the various body sizes. Again, I don't have the exact part numbers, but I'm trying to give you a solid list of items you'll need to research.

A set of clutch/brake pedals are fairly common on e-Bay for the A Bodies. Prices range from $40 - 120, depending on that days insanity level. The linkage from the pedal, out throught the firewall to the Z bar, then from the Z bar to the clutch fork. Again, there are two different lenght clutch forks. I think the A Bodies are the longer of the two. You'll also need the Z bar mount for the bell housing and the ball stud that mounts to the left side inner frame rail area.

All the linkage bushings, rubber boots, and retainers are still availible from Mopar Performance. The clutch linkage & hardware is out there from either Brewers Perfromance, Mancini's, or that damn e-Bay.... For a clutch I have a Centerforce dual friction disc and pressure plate/bearing set. It cost me about $300. Don't cheap out on this piece unless you want to get good at swapping clutches if you intend to beat on it a bit.

You might want to consider a Scattersheild instead of a bell housing while your doing this, but that can add another $100-300, again depending on catching a deal. Small block Scattershields don't pop up too often on e-Bay. I waited for 2 months before grabbing my used one for $150, only to see one sell THE NEXT WEEK for only $85. New! Roll the dice.... These cost about $300 new.

A good tach, shift light, and rev limiter are purely optional and a matter of preference. Again, it depends on what you plan on doing with the car. If it's a driver, maybe go with a low level clutch. If you plan on beating it up, go with the Centerforce. Very low pedal effort, incredible grip.

And finally, a GOOD shifter. A GOOD NEW shifter with new bushings and levers. I prefer the Hurst competion plus. Oh yeah.... a transmission hump that will need to be welded in to replace the open hole you'll saw-zall out to get everything to fit. Repro's go for about $80-110.

Best advice: Buy a shitbox thats rotted to death and grab all those little pieces in one shot. Spend the real money on wear items, such as the clutch and flywheel. And of course, scan e-Bay on a daily basis. Once in a while complete 4spd. set up's are up for grabs. Just be cautious with the seller and remember, a bad transmission will reveal itself on the road test.... After you busted your tail!

Good luck, and to steal someone else's saying: May the 4spd. with you! :salut:

Thanks Fastback340 that was exactly what I was looking for. Some parts pilot bushing, clutch fork etc. I can pick up here and there. I will be at the Chrysler Classic (I believe) in Norwalk, OH. I plan to to take $250-300(I'm poor LOL) if I can find something decent I may pick it up, but my main objective will be to swing by Mancini and fix my sagging rear end. Of course if I have a chance at a 4spd I'll pick it up. Barracuda340S what pinion angle do you have on your car right now? Thanks guys keep it coming.

That was a great discription dude! Great Job!

Thanks Brett. It's just that my damn car is soooooo stuck in my head..... :puker:

Maybe tomorrow I'll finally have her running. Spare time is hard to come by these days.

check with hawaii duster he had an extra set of clutch peds that he may part with for the right price. get a good flywheel and go with the DF clutch most of us run them and they are the ****. Get a goo scattershield like Brett said you only have 1 set of feet.

I planned to use a centerforce and the lakewood bellhousing. I'll contact hawaii duster about the pedals. I talked to a guy at my parents/sister garage sale today, that I had to man for about 30 min. Used to be a Mopar guy now has some health problems, and a barn full of parts (engines, body parts, etc.) Said he knows that he has atleast 3-4 A-833's in the barn. He is pretty sure one came from his friends duster. Plus he may have some of the linkage etc. Is there a part# I should look for when choosing the trans? It's funny I just sat down for my break at work, and thought to myself I want a 4 speed. Funny how that happens huh. Looks like the A body Barracudas will be rolling deep in here soon. Thanks for the help guys.

Well thanks for the help everyone. I will have to go with the manual sooner than later since my TF727 took a dump. I'm buying this for $500 A body A833 COMPLETE !!!

This unit is from a '69 Barracuda 'S', as I understand it.
-contains the following:
-A-833 : 23 spline, STD (non-OD)
-Bellhousing, LA
-Fork bracket
-Clutch disc
-Pressure plate
-Shift rods and bracket
-Mr.Gasket 'T' handle short throw shifter.
- ALSO... throwing in a 10.5" FLYWHEEL !!!

I'll probably put it in then buy the Lakewood and Centerforce later. I'll just make sure to take it easy. I found floor hump, driveshaft on Moparts also. Pedals I'm going to search around a bit more for. May have a set at a junkyard I can pick up. What has to be done to the crank since it is a auto crank to mate the manual to the engine? I do plan to call Passon tommorrow to ask him some questions. Thanks for everyones current and future help.

On Summit's website it says clutch set. Is that for the pressure plate and clutch disk. Just wanted to know before I called them and ask them the stupid question. Part number is CTF-DF269739. Thanks for everyones help on my quest to put a 4spd in by Barracuda. I'm trying to put together a good transmission with all the necessary parts, and this message board, and Moparts has been a huge help.

This weekend I'm going to Norwalk for the Chrysler Classics, and hope to pick up some parts. I know I won't be able to pick up everything. Bellhousing/Skattershield and clutch set will have to wait for now. I have the pedals, driveshaft, and pilot bearing. I plan to pick up a trans for sure and if it has a bellhousing on it great. I also want to pick up the z-bar basically everything from pedals to the clutch itself. Other than the ball socked thingys is the z-bar the only other thing I need or is there more to it. Would rather buy z-bar and small important parts like that in person, rather than find out I have the wrong part after it has been shipped. Also other than buying a rebuild kit how much does it cost a transmission shop to rebuild a transmission of course it will allready be out of the car. Do I also need a special crossmember or mounts or are all of those the same, I certain mounts are the same. Thanks for the help guys can't wait until next summer, but I will have a busy winter complete front/rear end(Leaf springs) rebuild, trans change from auto to manual, interior will get a make over, and whatever else decides to break along the way.

Mopar Muscle Magazine had a pretty good article on that swap a few years ago. If you'd like, I could scan it and Email it to you.

See someone bumped my old thread. I forgot all about this thread as it's quite old. Just to let everyone know my 4 speed swap was completed years ago and is rocking. Found a 4 speed from a 69 Barracuda, I have a 69 Cuda, and went with a Scattershield and Centeforce DF clutch.
