Big block oil pump driveshaft

Any tips on removing these without pulling the intake? I'm trying to remove the driveshaft on a 440 so I can prime the oil pump - it's been sitting for some time. I've managed to lasso it with wire and pull it out about 1.5 inches - enough to disengage it from the oil pump but it won't come out any further. Any suggestions?
