I just had a chance today to look where you suggested.
Both motor and bell housing match my VIN.

Well the numbers don't match, but were you looking at the right numbers?
Look behind the drivers side head. Get a flashlight. On the flange where the bell-housing bolts to the engine you should find a stamped number. That number should match your vin.
