Throttle cable

Hey olddman: The 65 V8 A's had a three piece rod and bellcrank system to control the transmission lever. If you're missing all of that and want to install a cable setup, then either Lokar or Buchillion (sp) sell kits to accomplish this.
You adjust the linkage / cable so that when your carb is at WOT the transmission lever is all the way to the rear, thus giving maximum fluid pressure when it's most required.
