The ballast resistor is usually a white ceramic piece about 3 inches long. It is mounted on the firewall on the left or right side. There is a wire connector on each end. If you remove the connectors and use a short length of wire in place of the resistor to test ONLY. You can start the car and see if it runs when you let go of the key. If it does run without holding the key you should shut it off right away. You will then know if the resistor is bad. This resistor is out of the ignition circuit when you crank the engine over and in the circuit when you let go of the key.
