Gas additive to slant-6?

Hi everybody, new to the forum here. I got my reconditioned car last July and this spring it doesn't start very well. Full tank of gas, mechanic at garage said to add lead to the fuel. Will make engine run smoother and less pinging. Any of you have any experience with this? Thanks!
