Hey guys,
I have a slant six in my 73' dart swinger and by the looks of it hasn't been touched since the day it came out of the factory. It runs, but i would like to restore it to its greatest once again...or atleast get it runnin cleaner. I'm puttin new spark plugs in it tomorro and it already has a new 1bbl carb. Any opinions on where to start or what to do next? Also i wanted to get this six mean if you get what i'm saying so any ideas or thoughts on how to do that would be awesome.
Thanks, Brandon

Welp, Don't want to get you discouraged, but there is a ton of documentation on the slant over at .org

Slant Six articles

The biggest issue is going to be where you stop doing stuff to it :)

General tune up stuff will be a good start but have a plan first. For example you don't want to spend money on a new this or that if you will be upgrading it shortly there after.
Some things for consideration are:
Valve adjustment
Advance the timing - 5-8 degrees BTDC
Fuel line mod - if it is having hard start when hot issues
NGK long nose plugs
HEI mod - better idle and starting, allows you to remove the ballast resistor if you use a 12v coil as well
Electric fan or fan clutch - to get less drag on the motor.
2.25 inch exhaust.
Super six setup - 2bbl carb and intake
Gasket matching / head work.
....and the list can go on for weeks... but like I said, it's just when you want to stop... :toothy10:

depending on how far you want to go and the miles that are on it, you could replace the timing chain and have a basic valve job done. but if you want it to be mean , then you will want to have the head shaved to boost compression and have bigger valves , heavier spring installed as you will most likely go for a bigger camshaft. i personally am going with a super six setup (2bbl.) and hoping to get a set of dutra duals (instead of headers) you will find alot of good info at the slant six forum on this site.

X2

Recommend a good base line for starting the plan. After the general tune-up, measure compression, and check lean/rich on the carburetor. There is an amazing amount of aftermarket support for the leaning tower of power; cams, intakes, exhausts. Over at SlantSix.Org, you'll find answers and ideas that will help you settle on what you want to do.

Good luck. Enjoy!

my /6 :
9 to 1 pistons (mopar)
3 angle valve job
gasket match the head
clifford headers
comp cams 440 lift
shaved head .100
clifford 4 barrel manifold
390 carb
roller timing chain set
440 starter
melling hi-vol. Oil pump
haven't started it yet , the car isn't ready . Hope this gives you some ideas.

Watch using your Hi-Vol oil pump your begging for a cam gear/oil gear failure. You dont NEED the extra oil pressure on a slant.

haven't been on for a while. Whats the deal with hi vol oil pump- what happens and why? Thought more oil was better when you run the motor to its cams max ( and i will ). Explain your theory please. Why do they make them if they cause problems. Very curious.

Too much stress on the cam gear. ALL replacement oil pumps are higher volume than the stock units they replace. The slant does not suffer from any oiling issues thru 5.5K RPM. Oil mods to the block can improve oiling to certain spots for race apps. A hardened gear pump is available from myself and Doug Dutra (zero failures to our knowledge) to address the powdered Iron gear found on the new pumps.
All this is documented well on the slantsix.org web site.

PS contact me if you want to discuss it further.

without remembering what the gear looks like........... Can i change the gear or just swap out the pump! This just started out as a rebuild , but the gear head in me took over. I just want to see what this thing will do. I started on this motor in 95. Then i saw almost the exact same thing that i did in hotrod mag. Now its , is mine going to be the same or better. I'm going to look into this oil pump thing. Got any ideas on a dist. Talked to a factory mopar dude that said he runs /6's. He gave me parts # for the dist. But it calls for the orange ecu. From what i've read thats not the best choice. What about mallorys dist .? Do you know?

Get Rob aka Duster Idiot over at slantsix.org to build you a distributor none better. You can send me a stock pump gear or after market gear as a core and I can sell you a gear only. Or i can sell you a gear/pump assy all ready to go.
I like HEI. Its CHEAP and simple, works GREAT and wont leave you stranded. Gets rid of the ballest resistor and GM 4 pin modules are a dime a dozen. Buy a good non-ballest coil and you are set. There is a good write-up over at .org along with a thread on questions and where to get what and how to make it work.
Hope this helps,
Frank

thanks bro. Moneys tight right now but i'm going to look into the hei. I read the article on pumps that dutra wrote. Never heard any of that. Its not in the factory manual either. But i still love my mopars. Can you change the rotors in these pumps cheaper than buying a new one? Whats your opinion on my combo with a manual shift 904 and 411 tails. On paper its supposed to run 100 in the 1/4. Yea / nea? Oh yeah. Frame connected and mini tubbed
