That's the way the cam companies advertised and sold them (1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full race) back in the 50's and into the 60's. The actual duration and lift was not used. So you can't blame people from that era for using the terminology of the day.
I am actually continually surprised at how many folks actually know what my car is and the year too.
