‘63 Valiant - steering shaft play

You don't have to disassemble the steering column, but you should remove it from the car. Just remove the two bolt holding the column to the dash, and the 4 (3?) bolts holding the firewall bracket that supports the lower end of the column. Disconnect the turn signal harness, then remove the...

How many of you grease your own trailer axles?

Well, here's what happens when you don't grease your bearings. Had to replace the axle.

While replacing the driver's side front caliper on my truck (04 Ram 2500), noticed that the sway bar end link bushings were gone. So, put these in.

    Bushing sleeve

Well, I replaced the lower control arm bushings in my 65 Barracuda couple years ago. Moogs would not go in all the way. So I ordered Delcos. Moog on the left, Delco on the right. Notice the difference in how the upper lip is beveled. Tops looked different, too. Moog on the left...

    Your first mopar...?

It is a Clay Smith Cams "Mr. Horsepower" decal. The Thrush decal was inspired by the Clay Smith version, which dates back at least to the fifties or even earlier, the company having its origins in the thirties. Mr. Horsepower - Wikipedia.

Those parts would be included in the retainer kit linked in post #17.

If it fits that tightly, I wouldn't think you even need a rebuild kit.

That top cap is a PITA to put on well enough that it won't come off again. This is a good fix. Mopar A B E Body 66-73 Steering Column Coupler Stainless Cover, Black Seal & Clamp / Retainer 3" There are other sources. I know there are some on ebay.

    68 Charger steering issue

The blocks inside the coupler can be installed correctly or 90 degrees out. The are rectangular, not square, so if the latter, you'll have all kinds of play in the steering. I'll second the quality of rebuilt power steering boxes. Way back, I put a rebuilt PS box in my Valiant, could never...

    Grinding noise and erratic speedometer

I believe I used 3-in-1 oil for the speedometer itself. Graphite speedometer cable lubricant on the cable. Pull the cable out of its sheath, lube it all the way down, but wipe the top 6 inches or so dry because it will wick up and get into the speedometer, which according to what I've read...

    Grinding noise and erratic speedometer

Try lubricating the speedometer AND the cable. Either one can cause your symptoms if dry. I've had to lube them on several cars. Now if I could just remember what lube I used. Speedometer cable lubricant for the cable, can't remember what I used for the speedometer.

QUESTION, For the Day. Anybody Know What These Parts Are For?

Same bracket as the early (64-66) 273s. That's why there are two sets of holes to mount to the head. You'll notice that the two lower holes are used on the wedge. (This bracket may have been used on 318s and 340s after 66, don't know. Mine is now on the 340 that's in my 65 Barracuda.)

What Are You Doing To/With Your Car Today?

If anyone's wondering, I ran 13.07 at 105.7. Top end is newer, but the short block was put together in 1990, low-compression cast pistons, .450 lift cam, 3.55 gears. Of course, now I'm thinking, a little more compression, little more cam, hmmm . . . .

My 273 turned out to be a 318...what did I buy?

No, no pix of that valve from below. But I don't think yours is in the original place - looking at the hook on the mounting bracket, it should poke into a small locating hole in the frame, and I don't see it. And I wouldn't think the factory would have put the valve so close to a 273 manifold...

What Are You Doing To/With Your Car Today?

Trying to get my 67 Barracuda ready to run at the strip this weekend. Will be the first time it's been to a strip in probably 20 years. I replaced the short length of fuel hose that connects the main line to the fuel pickup in the gas tank, and I also added a radiator overflow canister that...

best hi flow ex manifold/drivers side

I fit an early 340 exhaust manifold on the driver's side by switching to a power steering column and using an adapter (Firm Feel, etc) to hook it to the manual steering box. That put the joint far enough back to clear the manifold. I ran the outlet pipe between the torsion bar and the frame...

My 273 turned out to be a 318...what did I buy?

I have TTI's on my 65, doesn't look to me like the master cylinder is any closer to the headers than it was to the 340 manifolds I used to run. I did fabricate new brake lines from the m/c down to the combination valve, which I had to move to the rear to get it out of the way of the headers.

    LD4B Intake question

Right, that's why I had to add several washers, to get the sender up high enough to clear the floor of the water passage. I edited my post to clarify that my old intake did not have the boss.

    LD4B Intake question

Back in the seventies, I ran a Torker 340 intake. It had no provision for a mechanical temperature gauge. I just drilled and tapped a hole in the intake's water jacket, between the thermostat and the driver's side head - basically where the factory location was, and where Edelbrock puts the...

What Are You Doing To/With Your Car Today?

I just finished mounting four new trailer tires on my open car hauler. I've mounted car tires before without too much effort, but these just about finished me. I assume because the sidewalls of a trailer tire are a lot stiffer than a passenger car tire. Anyway, next time I'll just pay someone...
