    My 422 smallblock build

Not gonna hurt my feelings at all, pretty thick hide on me. Same here. Hindsight is crystal clear……and usually painful.

    My 422 smallblock build

Trust me, with the amount of money I have wasted on this “W2 journey”, I could have bought a complete cnc’d Indy top end ready to bolt on. I crossed the line between crazy and insane long ago. There is no help for me now…….

    My 422 smallblock build

Just like the one it is replacing, it started life as a first generation 810E econo head. It was then machined to remove the rocker pedestals, opened the intake valve to 2.08”, cleaned up the deck surface, cut the guides down for positive seals, and lowered the spring pocket a bit.

You are correct. The welding process was a failure. The cracks reappeared right along side the weld bead. It was better than it was before welding, so I attempted to seal the cracks from the inside by pouring epoxy into the water jacket and standing the head on its corner. It initially worked...

    My 422 smallblock build

Making forward progress again. Porting the replacement head using the DC porting templates. I’m super busy this time of year between working full time, coaching baseball in the evenings, and camping with the family on the weekends so finding even a few minutes here and there to work on it is...

Anyone Run a Crane Z-268-2 Cam in their 318?

I have a similar 318 build with 8.7-1 compression, 2.02 J heads, and I used the Comp Cams XE268 that has similar specs to yours. I installed it 4 degrees advanced and it has excellent low end performance. Out of steam by 5500 but that’s ok. Just make sure the valve springs are spec’d to the cam...

Anyone Run a Crane Z-268-2 Cam in their 318?

I’d install it 4 degrees advanced and send it.

How far in the hole 318 pistons

The pistons in my 1974 318 were .100” deep. Seriously. Measured with a dial indicator and deck bridge.

    Pop pop on exhaust side

What type of fuel pump? Verify correct fuel pressure at the carb. My brother-in-law’s Maverick developed a pop in the exhaust and we tracked it down to a failing fuel pressure regulator. He was running an electric Holley pump.

    SB Stroker Intake Choices

You have 2 of the oval port intakes? Please think of me when you decide to part ways with one of them. I’ll come down from Clarion and chew the rag with you for a couple hours. :poke:

    SB Stroker Intake Choices

Unfortunately, yes. The 360-3 was on my Christmas list but Santa must’ve heard I’ve been an asshole. So no bueno’.

    SB Stroker Intake Choices

If it were me, I think I’d invest in the Indy intake because there is no way that thing is gonna run out of steam at 6k rpm. Unless of course that’s where you set the rev limiter. Sell the two intakes you have to recoup some of the cost….. oh who am I kidding? You own an R/T Challenger, I’m sure...

Adding Bronze Bushings to Ductile Iron Rockers

I would say go for it. Lots of meat on those W2 iron rockers.

Adding Bronze Bushings to Ductile Iron Rockers

I honestly can’t say that I have ever heard of anyone breaking any iron rocker arms.

Adding Bronze Bushings to Ductile Iron Rockers

Just to add to this discussion, here are pictures of said rockers side by side. W2 Econo on top, W2 bushed bottom Factory 273 with bushing added by RAS on top, aftermarket 273 (Isky?) unbushed bottom.

I love the cam choice. Just wish it was cut on a 106 LSA! :poke:

    My 422 smallblock build

I found a professional weld shop fairly local to me that supposedly has the ability and experience to make the necessary repairs. I will be dropping the wounded head off at their place in the next week or so. They said that they would like to bead blast it clean and mag the entire thing for...

    My 422 smallblock build

Little update. I was able to source a single replacement head for the cracked one thanks to a VERY helpful member here on the board. He has been a huge help to me throughout this project and I don’t know how to thank him enough. I won’t name him but he’s free to take a bow if he chooses. As...

318 with 360 heads milling : small valves

I milled a set of 360 heads .060” off the deck surface and .050” off the intake surface and gained a full point of compression on my 318. 74 motor with pistons near .100” below deck. Chambers went from 68cc to 57cc with 2.02/1.60 valves. Not worth the $$$ or hassle in hindsight.

Overdriven pulley how much is too much?

Seems like this should be an easy theory to test using a dyno facility and a controlled environment. Only swapping pulleys between tests. Surely it has been done and proven one way or another.

Another set of W2 heads that leaked

Before. After we installed it in the car I was filling the cooling system and looked under the car and saw the dripping. Looked around and found coolant weeping from the crack. We hadn’t fired the engine yet.

Another set of W2 heads that leaked

Going through this trouble right now. One head cracked, the other didn’t. My brother is going to try to tig weld it with the new-ish “EZ Rod” tig rod. Then I might try to get some epoxy inside the water jacket where the crack is. I did buy a replacement from a member here because I don’t have...

    My 422 smallblock build

These are 810 castings but we milled the saddles off to run blocks. So basically they are “race heads” now. Open chamber for 59* block. I suppose I could look for either an econo head or a race head, just need to machine it accordingly. Also, mine oil the rockers through the deck. I’m just...
