Can a stock fuel pump produce too much pressure?

I did rebuild the Holley from the car and while it idled fine, it sputters a bit under a load. No flooding. I changed the primary metering block, the only one it had. It runs a bit better but still not perfect. Maybe there is something embedded in a passage or something. I did soak it in Chemdip...

    Holley 750 puking fuel

Well, it seems to be fixed. That fuel pressure reading is a moving target.

Another kit had a needle and seat with the seal in it. This one has a wider foot to it. Here goes….

    Holley 750 puking fuel

Uhhh…. It took about a minute to pull the seat out and it HAS the o-ring. Don’t you hate when you think you found the problem but you didn’t?

    Holley 750 puking fuel

I just found the first one that I took out. I see my mistake. This seal is flush with the body of the cylinder. It probably wasn’t sealing. Then I put in one with NO seal/o-ring, making it worse. I’m going in for the night. I’ll get back to this tomorrow. Thanks!

    Holley 750 puking fuel

I looked through the stash. Years ago, I bought out the car stuff owned by an old timer. In with it all, he had some Holley parts. Here are some needle valves I just saw. Those have seals/o-rings. New ones still in in the plastic don’t. I found these. Remember 35 mm film...

    Holley 750 puking fuel

Yeah I know… you read the headline and think Hey….just adjust the float level! I have. It isn’t so simple. I’m tinkering with this car… It is a fairly mild 360 with a MP 280-474 cam, Weiand intake, cast iron manifolds and a Holley 600. The 600 is fine. I have a Holley 750 I got from a friend...

    Cars that sit awhile.

Thanks. I have a 67 Dart that sits awhile too. I usually do get to start it before the battery charge gets too low. This Duster was on its way to becoming a cool car. Then it sat. I’m slowly getting to it. These wheels sure look better than skinny black steel 15” stock ones. I need to...

    Cars that sit awhile.

The tank was new about 10 years ago. The fuel coming up to the filter is sort of amber in color. I don't know if that is from the fuel stabilizer or old skanky gas. I put 3 gallons in it last week or so. I make it a habit to put stabilizer in the tank when I put in fresh gas because I don't know...

    Cars that sit awhile.

The car itself is a sad story. The owner was my brother in law that seemed so enthusiastic but lost interest and gave up on it. It is a cool car to own.

    Cars that sit awhile.

I'm rebuilding the Holley. It has been awhile since I've torn one all the way down. A few days ago I started this thread: Can a stock fuel pump produce too much pressure? I had two carburetors in a row that flooded over when the engine was running so I suspected the fuel pumps were making too...

Can a stock fuel pump produce too much pressure?

Redemption. I used the carburetor from this car: Along with the fuel pump that I had in the car before: You know, the one I first thought might put out too much pressure? Boom. It idles great, runs great and doesn’t flood over. The problem was not high pressure but bad floats or something...

Can a stock fuel pump produce too much pressure?

This car defies my usual good fortune. It was put together on a budget for a brother in law that had whims that changed as the wind blows. If he made friends with a guy with pink hair, in 2 weeks his would be pink too. He glommed onto me and my interest in cars but didn’t have much money. I...

Thanks, Rob. Looking those numbers up took some time. That was considerate of you.

Can a stock fuel pump produce too much pressure?

I didn't put a gauge on the line. I thought that maybe with two carburetors showing the same symptoms that maybe the pump was pushing too much pressure. It looks like this: No cast in identifying marks, just the ink printed marks you see here. I changed to another one that looked...

Can a stock fuel pump produce too much pressure?

Holy crap, you think that is it? Ethanol is all we have here. I often have to replace rubber fuel lines here because they rot out after a few years. I have a few running cars that sit many months between uses. I've had to rebuild the carburetors in them a few times. It is my own fault...I think...

Bewy, that is a good point. When symptoms aim in one direction, that is usually the problem.

Can a stock fuel pump produce too much pressure?

I seem to recall that the pump just looked like any parts store type of pump. I'll get a better look tomorrow. Thanks for all the input, guys. Even an idea that is a bit out there can be worth looking into.

Can a stock fuel pump produce too much pressure?

With the Holley, I pulled the needle and seat and replaced it. It seemed to run the same. I removed the side plug in the float bowl and fuel drained out so I adjusted the float setting. It still seemed to puke out the vent tube. The ThermoQuad does the same thing. The ThermoQuad has maybe 15...

Can a stock fuel pump produce too much pressure?

I have a strange situation here. I have a stock 360 in a Duster, it has a Weiand 4 barrel intake and a Holley 600 single feed VS # 1850 carb. The Holley was rebuilt a couple of years ago but the car has been sitting. I've had this car here since 2007 as a project with my brother in law who lost...

Yeah, I had a cheap cover that got shredded over the years. I’m sure This Holley needs at least a basic cleaning and a needle and seat. The accelerator pump is stuck too. This is usually from gunk in the passage. I’ve put this stuff in the tank… If it is working, it isn’t doing enough. I’ve...

    Cars that sit awhile.

I know that I’m not the only one like this. Car guys will sometimes have more than one of the cars they like. I’ve seen it across all models of cars too… VW dudes that have 4 Beetles and a van, Ford guys with two Mustangs and a Torino. We Mopar guys do it too. This often means we have cars that...

Who has had good experiences with the Brawler series of carburetors?

If you can find that, it is the best plan. Some claim the ethanol mix has octane higher than the rating on the gas pump, just something to consider. All I can get at the pump is ethanol infused, "up to 10%" is on the sticker. If I cycle through the gas frequently enough, it seems fine except for...

Who has had good experiences with the Brawler series of carburetors?

The ethanol really screws with these cars that sit awhile. That is the problem that I've had...I start working on some car and get distracted and then, it sits....Months later, I go to drive it and many times it runs terrible if at all. The Dart has a leaky and weak accelerator pump shot. It...

Who has had good experiences with the Brawler series of carburetors?

It looks like Quick Fuel carries the Brawler line of carburetors. It surprises me that they look so much like the Holleys and aren't being sued for it. The Barry Grant carburetors had many Holley style components but at least they fancied up the float bowls and used an anodized cover for the...

Who has had good experiences with the Brawler series of carburetors?

That is nice of you to say but it is more of a fun dirt trail beater like the General Lee....1.03 torsion bars, 1.25" front sway bar, 6 stage leaf springs, 3/4" rear bar set up for fun off road. I love dirt drifting in this thing, it hangs the 4.10 SG axle out quite nicely on dirt. I've...

Who has had good experiences with the Brawler series of carburetors?

Carburetor tuning is something I still need improvement with. I have messed around with jets and power valves but beyond that, I haven’t done much. I’d be happy if the engine would just run reasonably smooth and make decent power. For now, I’m not looking to squeeze out the last inch of...

Who has had good experiences with the Brawler series of carburetors?

I’ve been a Holley guy for years. I like their simplicity and interchangeability. They sure have gone up in price though. I see these Brawlers that look like Holleys. The Roadkill guys have used them on project cars too. I’m in need of a good 600 cfm single feed 4 barrel for my 67 Dart. I...
