    Purple Monster Cam

I think part of the issue is that mopar probally used different cam grinders through the years, so nobody really would know who ground the one you have. I only had 2 cams go flat in 25+ years of building engines, and the were both purple shafts. But I have torn down used engines that had them in...

    Purple Monster Cam

Sounds like your experience was quite different than mine! After 2, I refused to buy or install a purple shaft cam anymore.......Glad you had better luck!

    Purple Monster Cam

If its a purple shaft cam, odds are pretty high that it will fail regardless of how you break it in. In fact, the ONLY cams I ever had go flat, were BOTH mopar purple shaft cams...That is out of probally 100 engines........just sayin

    Oil to used

Very good chance your ticking lifter is a lobe wearing, due to these modern oils...... I would pull the valve cover and make sure that valve is opening all the way, if all is good, consider yourself lucky, and then run a oil designed for flat tappet cams, NOT a off the shelf 10/30. JMHO

    Grooving lifter bores

Those lifter bores are under oil pressure all the time, and if you prime the engine with the intake off, you will see a ton of "leakage" around all 16 lifters. Adding a grove to each one would put a lot more oil leakage in the system for sure. MOST of the actual lubrication of the cam lobes...

Trick Flow 440 heads, The Real Deal?

Mike, be carefull saying that out loud on here, most members on this site don't believe that!

    400 BB build issues

Dude, you MUST be kidding.......you SERIOUSLY lack even BASIC diagnostic skills, so then you want to come on here and lash out at people who actually know what there doing, and who try to give you advise? sheesh.........:wack:

657 HP with a 509 cam? Not by me!

The biggest tool the engine builders use to sell engines is the dyno numbers.........It happens right on this site too, post big HP numbers, but NEVER any results from the track. The only way to compare HP on a dyno, is back to back on the same dyno.

    11:1 compression ratio fuel?

Then we don't really know either

    Smog 440 build? Worth it?

And another thing worth mentioning, AGAIN, is dyno numbers are just that.......numbers. Lots of "big hp" builds, when installed into real life cars, don't back up the dyno numbers. Big dyno numbers sell engine builds, think about it

wondering if i got a good deal

If it has a edelbrock crossram on it, you got a REALLY good deal.....

    What do you think?

That .528 solid is a lot more docile than you would think......
  16. replicaracer43

    What do you think?

Yeah, I just meant that the factory spec was usally higher than the actual ratio, so your to the good there. I had a 69 383 that was not a HP, but it had about .010 positive deck pistons, IIRC, unported 906s, and a 474 purple shaft hyd cam in it, that thing was a dingle honed backyard special...

    What do you think?

I am pretty sure it would make more torque than your sheet shows though.....
  18. replicaracer43

    What do you think?

The HP 383s made about 335 IIRC, with a "advertised" 10.5 to one compression, you probally have more actuall compression, that .528 is a good grind, my opinion is that it probally could get close to your numbers, but a cheapy set of headers and I would say for sure. I don't think the porting...

big block swap stick or faq?

Everything I read says 340 HP on a regular 413.. Not to be confused with the letter cars, that may have had different intake packages. Just a regular 413 from a imperial. The engine does have potential, but the cost of pistons makes the 440 a better choice IMO
  20. replicaracer43

big block swap stick or faq?

I think your wrong on your HP quote there, he aint talking about a max wedge 413, just a regular old big car 413.....

oil slinger - yes or no?

I re-install them in every engine I build, that piece of stamped sheetmetal aint gonna ever slow the motor down, and I feel it keeps from loading up the front seal, and probally helps the chain get oil. But I am a amature, and that's only my opinion

    Mopar 400 2bbl

Gotcha..... if he gets that thing to handle, he should really kick ***! Those torque numbers are really strong!
  23. replicaracer43

    Mopar 400 2bbl

I guess what I am saying is, build a small block version so we can see the numbers, 2 barrel oval track type build. Heck, I don't even know of a track that allows anything other than a small block here in the south, most of the tracks are pushing the GM crate motors..Interesting build though!
  24. replicaracer43

    Mopar 400 2bbl

Good numbers Mike, but a small block in my opinion would be a smarter choice, mopars are nose heavy, I wouldn't ever consider a B or RB engine because of the weight alone.. We like our cars to handle, that's the key in circle track....

    426 wedge build

Hey rumble, relax buddy!! I am just bouncing around ideas for the guy, he DID say it was gonna be a "budget" build, with a goal of 425 horse or so in his first post, and followed that up with something to the effect of peoples input is welcome. I DO think its cool to build that 383 block, and...

    426 wedge build

I keep thinking, in your original post you said "budget" build, and 425 or so horsepower, so I keep wondering why you wouldnt have just built a stock stroke 440.... I bet after all the custom parts and machine work, you will have spent more money on your smaller motor.....

    mech to Hyd CAm, Springs

You need to know seat pressure, installed hight, and open pressure or otherwise your just guessing..But my guess if they were correctly installed for that 575 lift cam, they are to much for your mild cam.
