Stop in for a cup of coffee

I've been using spray graphite on my existing headers for years. Haven't rusted, stays really well, look great to me. Once a year spray a bit in the cap, take a brush and do a little recoat. Then buff to nice sheen. To me it's a perfect solution for headers!

Stop in for a cup of coffee

Aw... you mean I can't just pretend! Yes, I'll certainly post photos. I heavily modified some long tube headers into mid length years ago, but this is the first time from scratch. Looking forward to it.

Stop in for a cup of coffee

Good morning! Breezy this morning, projected 40+ mph gusts midday. Big day, ...just got a FedEx notice my 3/8" header flanges are arriving today. Got a bunch of 1-7/8" tubing sitting here also. Planning a header build. May take me forever!!

    Patina...How to???

Love it! Real is REAL. History and wear showing honest use and love is cool. Never fails for me, whenever I go to a show I'll walk right by anything with perfect paint. I either want to see the work of builder, as in, I want to see the work in progress or on-going, OR I want to see the...

    Thermoquad question

As OP, I just happened to see back in post #25 where I gave a rundown on how my Thermoquad is set up. It says I drilled my accelerator pump nozzles to “.138”! When I meant that to read .038”!!! And as an UPDATE: I did have to replace the Bosch O2 sensor for the A/F gauge which solved my...

Ported X head 340 header size?

Thanks! I do see that the 1-5/8” flow enough. What always bothered me is the idea that exhaust flow out of a port with equivalent area to 1-7/8” is hitting the smaller header right off the exhaust port. That airflow “dam” off the port has to cause some turbulence that can’t be very helpful to...

Ported X head 340 header size?

Yes, these heads are beautiful. Thanks for one more vote for the 1-7/8”s. I’ve always felt a little guilty about not really using them more fully. The next time they are off I’m getting them to a flow bench to see what they really do. Years ago when I first had the seats touched up, the...

    Thermoquad question

...LD30, 1-5/8 headers for now, ported X heads, 273 adjustable rockers with the solid cam and EDM lifters as listed above. Timing is set at 18* with 38* total. (tested quickest in the 1/4) MSD distributor vac adv. is limited to 15* Plugs are NGK BPR5ES and are FINALLY looking good! To the...

    Thermoquad question

AEM Tech confirmed that the erratic readings indicate a need for a replacement Bosch sensor. Ordered one from Summit. I always appreciate the variety of suggestion here that help track down a solution. Often the info is helpful even if it turns out to not be the answer to the issue of the...

Ahhh, that’s pretty similar to my symptoms!! I’ll call them and see what they say. Thanks.

    Thermoquad question

I checked the piston and bore, did not seem rough or scarred and seemed to work OK, but I will try an ATF lube and see if that makes a difference.

Yeah, you’re probably right,I guess I’m going to have to start there.

    Thermoquad question

More than a second for sure. Go for a short drive and all looks good, then all of a sudden the A/F #s read very lean for the rest of the way back. But I don’t notice a difference in how it runs. I’ll do some close inspection of the external parts. ...it seems to be true that the numbers are...

    Thermoquad question

Must be just in the readings, I'm thinking... What are the symptoms if an O2 sensor is bad? Does it just quit? Mine isn't that old miles-wise. AEM A/F meter seems to be working fine, other than when it reads way lean part of the time. Engine build is on here. (freshen up) ...some basic...

    Thermoquad question

OK, after a vacation camping trip with wife and dogs, I am back on this. I enriched the rods screw a bit. The slight stumble when cracking throttle seems to be gone for now. The part throttle reading of 10's A/F is gone. But I still have some really weird stuff going on!!! I get a good A/F...

Ported X head 340 header size?

Maybe milder than you are thinking? ... duration at .050" is 235/243, it pulls pretty good 2200 up. Solid with EDM lifters. Fun cam with good pull and a nice sound. I'm only running a 2500 stall from PTC. I do wish I would have had the heads flow tested the last time I had them off. Just...

Ported X head 340 header size?

Hey All, just a question that some of you might have an opinion on. (there are some opinions here if I recall.) :D My 340 is pretty well sorted at this point, tuning etc. I have a true 9:1 motor, Lunati solid .526/.546 lift cam, port-matched LD340, big Thermoquad, etc. Cope built 518 OD...

    Thermoquad question

Hmmm Shouldn’t be, as the bowls appeared quite well attached and the I did coat of sealer (Seal-All? I think) over the seam to be sure. But...? I’ll also keep this in mind. May be a few days, maybe after a fall road trip planned, but I will check back with update.

    Thermoquad question

The nozzles I’m using are a little bigger than stock, but I believe I also drilled one another step larger so will try that. (And I believe moving to the top hole could bring the shot in quicker too). Never thought of that!! I will check it, and I do have a couple of parts carbs so if if I...

    Thermoquad question

For anyone who might enjoy thinking about TQ's a bit... I have everything pretty dialed in, and TQ sorted to the point of good looking plugs and good numbers in general on my A/F meter. (Timing on the 340 is at 18/38 which gives best 1/4 MPH and the ignition curve is pretty worked out as...

MSD 6A battery kill switch wiring

Success. Ran ignition feed for MSD back through the 4 pole switch, then to MSD small red wire. I did also power the fuel pump relay off the same wire as MSD, now when I turn the rear battery disconnect, the 340 definitely stops running!! Thanks for the help!

MSD 6A battery kill switch wiring

So I understand that in my case I could break the circuit either between my ignition switch and the fuse panel, or between the panel and the MSD box, then run that through the rear switch small posts, then feed the fuel pump relay from after the rear battery switch. Correct?

MSD 6A battery kill switch wiring

This is probably one of those situations where I go "DUH!!" when I figure it out, but here's the question: Wanting to be NHRA legal, I have a 1/0 battery cable from the rear battery through a kill switch to the starter, then to the big post on the starter relay. I have the alternator charge...
