Keep in mind that when you rake a car like that, you mess up your front suspension geometry a bit. Tire wear, slow down the steering (oversteer I believe).
"Normal." No, it's not. It's a feedback loop in the wiring/ connections causing a cycling event. If you are using an old electro-mechanicall regulator, and it is not in the harness, then it's the VR out of adjustment, or needs replaced.

I would bend up a cotter pin to slip into the oil hole, funny angle thing and just rotate the crank.
The cotter pin "flukes" laying across the bearing surface would just push the shell around till it'd pretty much fall out when nearly all the way around.
Just lay the new shell on the clean/lubed...
I would if there where someplace close. They do sell blank tubes at Summit, I may by one and out the yokes on, but then I still need to have it balanced.
