Power Steering setup - what tools do I need?

All the sockets are 12 point, and check the brand name. My cousin can’t fix a sandwich, much less anything on a car. The sockets are old Snap-On and the ratchet Cornwell. I suppose his wife’s granddad did it right back in the day. From my reading, it appears that roll pin is no joke, so maybe...

    65 Dart manual steering box

K, got the steering column out, only thing in the coupler was a shoe spring in the bottom of the coupler had a hell of a time trying to dig it out, finally went to the longest appendage on Me ( my little finger) and got it out, ordered a repair kit from Steer and Gear, I looked in the 65 and 67...

    Removing dowel steering shaft

That's not a roll pin, it holds the coupler shoes in place. I pressed mine out when I lengthened my power steering shaft to fit a manual box. A large vise might work also.

Best way to remove steering coupler pin

The roll pin is only going to hold the coupler to the gear box. The "guts" will slide out the back after the square cover/seal is removed. A correct size drift will knock the roll pin through. If there is an internal pin in the coupler holding in the guts, I have never seen one.

Steering coupler and master spline questions

Here is a picture of my p/s coupling spline and it has only one master spline and I tried to show it in relation to the pin hole. I don't believe it should have two master splines.

    How to remove PS box

I guess I don't understand why folks are showing you how to disassemble the coupler when all you want to do is take the whole column out... the coupler stays attached to the steering column. Once you have the coupler roll-pin out you just use a good sized pry-bar to gently work the coupler up...

65 Cuda Power Steering Box and Coupler Installation Issues

This is to the best of my recollection. The hole on the steering shaft is a guide hole. Nothing goes through it. The metal dowel pin looking think needs to go back through the steering shaft some where south of the guide hole. Your picture is blurry but it will be obvious where it goes It will...

    PW Steering Column, Need Help

Hey Dano, Isn't there a pin in the shaft that needs to come out to slide the flange bearing on? How do you get it out, like with what? Do you have to press it out? If I remember, there's a pin where the coupler is.

    Chinese made crap replacement parts

Is anybody else sick and tired of spending money on Chinese made crap parts that absolutely suck? Recently I have bought quite a bit of mostly small parts to redo some things on the Duster and I've slung a tool or two on more than one occasion while trying to install some of this crap! The...

Steering coupler installation on steering column

Hello Everybody, Firstly I would like to thank everyone that has posted on this thread all the information has been really helpfull. I have one silly question. How to remove PS box

THIS The one at Horrid Freight works well enough. So far as the coupler, I usually pry it back some, then insert a large end wrench for a spacer so I can pry some more. They do get rusty. You need a large proper diameter punch long enough to "get up" where you can hammer on the...

    65 Dart manual steering box

I've seen that in 64's maybe you got a carry over. Does your coupler have a perfectly rectangular end or does it have a rounded center? The rectangle box couplers took a different seal thats shown in Avispa's nice pic. I could slide the column up 2 inches in my old 65 Barracuda, I didnt even...

    Steering Coupler Rebuild "How To"

The steering shaft hole is for the pin that holds the shoes in coupler. Sounds like power steering to manual conversion was make on your car. There are companies that offer an extension for the shaft to steering gear.

    67 steering column question....

yep I'm ok with the coupler stuff, I was talking about the two parts in my pic that are still on the column. It makes more sense now that I got the shaft pin out and slid them off. I took apart what I'm calling the bearing housing and matched up the pieces with those shown in the Classic...

    Scary steering shaft/coupler failure!

Huh? If the crimped on rubber seal clamp comes off the top , there's nothing to stop the shaft and shoes from coming out. Where would this 'safety pin' go? I had a similar experience after a romp off a green light. The column pulled up 2 inches through the 2 bolt plate under the lip of the dash...

    Power Steering is Very Sloppy

Thanks for all the feedback. The "how to rebuild" thread was particularly enlightening. This will probably be my winter time project. I have a couple questions. Steering coupler and master spline questions

You might look deep into the coupling and see if the splines are uniform all the way to the end. Could be a bad area that needs cleaned up. A triangle file works wonders sometimes.

Box at end of steering column

The Chrysler box coupling has a cap that is somewhat "bottle cap" crimped in place. I do as little distortion as possible to remove it ( like a bottle opener does ) so I can reuse it / put it back again. Yes the coupling rebuild kit includes a new cap but... its just a flat piece cut out...
