    Bushing or not?

Ok, so I have another question...because this car was originally a p/s car and as mentioned above it was switched to manual, the original column coupler wouldn't engage with the new m/s box so my son used a coupler adapter that he was able to get from a member here, it works but the female...

    Gear slips into neutral

Are you driving it with the steering coupler like that??? If so, you've got bigger nuts that I do. You may want to get that fixed. It's missing the shoes/spring and the pin should be midway into the coupler body, not out towards the end like that (there's a spec in the FSM - I think it's like...

Thanks for the detailed step by step. If I can’t find a simple solution I will use this as a guideline to remove the dash board.

Pulling the cluster is not as hard as it sounds. If you don't have a service manual, go over to MyMopar.com and download one, free The basics of pulling the cluster (I am 75, and have done this in the last couple of years) 1..Disconnect battery ground 2...If able reach up into dash from...

    Steering column coupler removal?

Glad to help, make sure the roll pin fits thru the groove on the splines on the steering box before installing coupler and pin.

U-joint on steering shaft: float or bolt down?

I can see the small hole in the coupler body where the small roll pin installs to keep the coupler from pulling apart. The early cars don't have that feature. But, it is also impossible for the coupler to pull apart in that fashion. I might could see the coupler sliding off the gear box, but it...

    steering shaft pin

68 barracuda, installed 318 engine, trans, headers up from bottom. When steering column came in contact with steering box, it didn't line up as I was doing this myself, forgot to view when lowering body to k frame. Removed steering column into drivers area and out of vehicle. New coupler kit...

    steering column ????

There is a fsm measurement as to how far the shaft goes down into the coupler. It is adjusted by the fore and aft slots in the column bracket. If they are left loose, the box end portion of the shaft could bottom out in the coupler.

    Steering Coupler

For what it costs and, the fact that you have a rebuild kit in hand, replace it. Way easier to do it now !

    Steering column coupler removal?

Thanks Ragtop. Is there any trick to installing the roll pin once the coupler is fully seated? Just hammer it in?

    Complete rally dash frame removal

I did knock the pin out, it "exploded" due to not being perfectly inline while pulling on it. Once steering column was out, I could remove the coupler from box by hand.

    Steering shaft U-Joint question?

Just use the same diameter pin that is used in the pot coupler- the "steering shaft to shoe pin":

    [Found!] Steering Coupler Roll Pin

I need a roll pin for the coupler on my 67 Barracuda. I'm coming up empty handed on Ebay, and it seems silly to buy the whole rebuild kit when I just rebuilt it last year. Thanks

    Complete rally dash frame removal

I would have popped the pin out of the steering coupler and slid it off the steering gear instead of exploding it, but, it'll work.

The Great Pumpkin - '71 Duster

...is already two inches shorter than a manual steering shaft. I would have to knock the lower cross pin out and drill a new hole for the coupler pin. It winds up being almost the same length as a cut-down manual shaft. Swap the top half of the previous floor shift shaft into the column shift...

    Stupid Steering Coupler Question

The later roll pin style coupler will work if you keep power to power and manual to manual

    Steering column coupler removal?

With the coupler and gear out you can remove the roll pin and rebuild the coupler on the shaft then put the box back in and reinstall the roll pin.

    Steering Shaft Removal/Replacement

Is there a length difference between the Borgeson box and a factory manual steering box? Is it splined to fit a factory Mopar steering coupler? If so, which one - manual, or power (there are two different coupler shaft sizes I believe)? I can't recall if the shaft on the early A's is a...

    Steering column coupler removal?

The round hole(bigger one) at approx 3 o'clock takes a roll pin to keep the coupler attached to splines. There is splines in there. Stick her finger in it.

    65 ohhhh barracuda

Did you pound out the roll pin from the small hole in the coupler? The roll pin prevents the steering shaft/coupler from pulling off of the steering box. Pull the roll pin and the coupler should slide off of the steering box splines.

This just doesn't look "right" (manual steering)

I never did get the pin out and I didn't want to booger it up so I just pulled the column and the shaft.

    SM Head Install... forgetting anything?

What I see, is the coupler is slid down, likely the role pin is below where it should be, or not even there. That coupler is way too far down.

This just doesn't look "right" (manual steering)

This is very true, BUT, it appears like there would be a lot of slop there... I did the kit on my 66 satellite it was 20 bucks for the pin the little pieces the new Rubber seal and a new lid the entire rebuild kit for the coupler I forget where I got it from I think I picked it up at Big Daddy's...

    SM Head Install... forgetting anything?

Nope, if those shoes can move in or out, there is a serious problem. The big pin, not the roll pin, goes through a hole in each shoe. They should not move. The red line points to the pin that goes through the shoe. If the shoes work their way up and out. The shaft may spin it the coupler. It...

    SM Head Install... forgetting anything?

The gaskets that were leaking are the style that come with gasket sets and are for cast iron manifolds only. Do not try to use those on any headers, as DentalDart already found out. Also, the tiny roll pin or dowel pin in the steering coupler was for assembly purposes, to keep the coupler body...

    Steering column coupler removal?

Ok thanks... spline is pretty hard to see but it looks like it does match up to that smaller hole... that coupler was not installed when I started this rebuild. I guess Ill try to find one online. I assume that you install the pin AFTER you fully connect up the coupling to the steering box...

finding a 67 Dart steering shaft

The power steering shaft is 37.5” in length end to end without coupler and the manual shaft is 40 5/8”. Starting in 70’ the key moved to the column so these shafts have a cross pin in the upper portion for the steering wheel lock plate. 67’ was the first year for the collapsible column so the...
