    230 cam (which ain't crazy big) and magnum heads equal 400 hp, I imagine with trick flows you still could hit 400 hp with less cam, which way is generally more streetable ? More cam less head flow or vice versa ?

    BACK IN THE DAY i BUILT MY 318 ON THE CHEAP cut the heads 20tou valve job holley street dominator and a 340 cam put in an 83/4 rear with 3:55 gears as the stock rear melted after a few runs also ran a thermoqaud off a 74 440 was good enough to keep up with firechickens fun car for a few $$...

    *barely* equals 400hp and a 230 cam in a 318 is what i'd consider nearing the ragged edge of street manners, especially if equipped with a single plane and big carb. as to the TF & cam question, i'm not gonna open that theoretical box of pandora.

    If you are serious about making power like a late model engine you need to disabuse yourself of the notion that a Chrysler head with standard rockers is worth spending a nickel on. If you want to build a 500 hp 318 with a small cam you use W2 heads or better. Anything else is just expensive...

    What cam to use in a 318

    "By the numbers" the comp XE 256 almost looks like the "perfect" cam for a 318 that otherwise stock except for a 4 barrel and dual exhaust.

    1969 D100 Pickup Exhaust question

    1969 318 has the good 230 horsepower engine. 9.2:1 compression ratio. Adapt on a 4 barrel carb (Edelbrock 1406 600 cfm with electric choke) it will wake up that stock engine with the stock cam snd give it the fuel it needs to run. Will easily do more than 65 mph. ☆☆☆☆☆

    If rebuilding you can make measurements to find out and make any necessary mods to fit whatever cam you want. What you should be finding out what cams are gonna suit your build and if they require you to do mods to run them piston to valve and or retainer clearance etc.. Then you could decide...

    Can I switch over the oil pan+ pickup, mounts, acc, from the 318 to a 360 LA? Are there any differences in 360 LA, lers say foe example the MoHo 360? Wouldn't a 5.9 roller engine be better then?

    SP2P Edelbrock, or a Offenhauser Dual Port. The Offy came in square bore, and spread bore. I ran a 318 size one on my van for many years. TQ's and Rochesters. My engine was a 360 with an RV cam.

    Keep the 273. You have a fine forged bottom end and factory mechanical lifters. Put commando pistons and cam in the old girl and you will be making 5 more horsepower than a stock 318. Or put a d dart spec cam in her and you will be making 45 more horsepower than a 318. The 318 also never came...

    So on a small block 318/392 la motor. 71’ casting date. I am Converting to hydraulic roller lifters and cam which I have. Morel linked lifters. Is this procedure is necessary even for non racing applications.

    Here's a head shootout on a 302/306 with 9.##:1 cr, xe264hr cam same as the 350/360 hp 5.9l magnum had, air gap and headers, made least 306 hp with stock heads (similar to 318 heads) and most 396 hp with AFRs. Shows without going crazy on cam 212/218 .512" 114 and good heads you can make good...

    Not sure what to do

    As long you got a mechanically decent engine no reason not to do the basic tune, 4bbl and mild cam with at least duals, headers better, stall and gears help too. No reason can't get 240-280 hp. Here's stock low cr 318 long block with 4bbl headers and xe262h cam for 282 hp @ 5000 rpm...

    Heavily ported Edelbrocks...solid roller cam but I don't remember the numbers. In truth, it was professionally built at Indy in Southern California...but I have the dyno sheet to prove it! Damn I gotta put that car back together soon! Jeff

    318 Scratch free cam install. The hard way.

    After learning how to install cam bearings, buying the installation tool and doing it myself for the first time, the last thing I wanted to do was to do it all over again. Overkill? Perhaps. Did it work? PERFECTLY. Not one nick, mark or scratch on the fresh new cam bearings.
