    1st thing I'd is drop hp expectations, there's a big difference between a 425 and 500 hp even a 375 and 400 hp depending on heads. Heads basically decides power potential and cam cr etc. decides how much of that potential your gonna use. Stock 360 heads with reasonable street cam for a 318...

    Plus equal work porting/valve/vj etc.. to 360/5.9 heads will give you probably at least 40 more cfm over 273/318 heads why give up 60+ hp, nevermind a set of aftermarket heads. No one is saying 302 can't work, they just don't make much sense in most cases. Imagine a basic zero decked 318-328...

    Had that cam in a 9 to 1 318 with stock 360 heads. It was a little soft on the bottom end with the stock converter but still ran 14.0 at 101 with 3.55 open rear at 3500 lbs. It should work great in a 10 to 1 340.

    You may be thinking in terms of just one problem; whereas I'm thinking in terms of any combination of problems. In my experience, with a 318, there is easily room in the P/V clearance for the cam-chain to jump several teeth, and, the 318engine will keep running with retarded cam-timing...

    Depends on what ya want... in a street cruiser car a 318 is fun, however it seems today everybody is goin racin' which I cant figure out why alot of tracks are closing...:) now your teen needs pistons just pick the right ones and a cam to go with those J heads and youll be ok.
