Question for the head porting experts: Would a well ported set of heads (like Edelbrock or SM) and a well matched intake get you there? 5 hundo HP with a 318 and say, a solid roller cam with sub 230 degrees or duration?

Old style grinds. Lots of advertised duration and not a lot of lift. Easy on valve train and springs.

I went from a 318 TBI to a 5.9 SMPI and for me the bottom end torque difference was night and day better. Even pulls a steeper hill in OD without kicking down now. Completely different rig.

That ‘87 318 is a good motor, especially if it’s a roller. Put a good intake, carb, headers, mild cam and dual timing chain with a metal gear on it and it will move that Dart around just fine. If you decide on the 360 just remember it’s externally balanced and the 318 is internally balanced
