    Good Cam for 318

Yet another 318 cam thread that has the OP going from a .400 lift cam to a .500 lift on the first page. ...and all the other stuff. I didn't even have time to get the popcorn smiley out. I'd look at those Summit 6900/6901 cams, or for a more modern grind, the Comp XE 256 or Lunati equivalent.

    Not sure what to do

To me there's two main ways to look at a performance build. 1st, build to a certain hp, and for the most part a 318 is basically just as capable as other engines for the general hp most build to, but generally you need more rpm and all that comes with it, stall, gears, idle etc.. Which may or...

    318 low-rpm performance ........... for the NEWBE

The 318 takes all the parts a 340/360 basically can, on some max effort the bore is gonna limit it. But for the general hp were talking about a 318 should be able to build similar to stall to shift point hp as the others just gonna be at a higher rpm generally. Now if we limit it like factory...

    Cams for 318's

318 cams are one thing but is there any positive deck height .030 over pistons to up compression for the LA 318? Last I looked there wasn't much to choose from in pistons and nothing was that inexpensive.

    318 cam

If you look at post #17 stock 318 with 4bbl headers and comp xe262h cam, it ain't hard to imagine how a xe250h and xe256h or similar cams would respond, the down low rpms 3500 and under probably pretty similar, above probably a drop of 10-15 ish hp for each step down and a loss of peak hp rpm by...

273 swap to 318/ build, cost, potential, daily driver

The Magnum engines are better tech, are low cost and easy to obtain. The 360 is preferred because its bigger. The bores of either 318 or 360 Magnum most of the time are very healthy due to coming from a fuel injected engine- no flooding and washing down of cylinders like an LA engine with a...

    318 power!

GTX JOHN said that his 318 has a compression ratio of 8.5:1. I used the Wallace Dynamic Compression Ratio Calculator, I put in all of the required information, I used a 72* ivc because he said that his cam has lots of duration so I checked out cams and the one's that had 300 plus degrees of...

    Horsepower Estimate?

245 hp is net hp, when talking built hp most are talking in dyno trim, which at very least is no accessories best tune, generally headers. Most engines in dyno trim are at least 30 + hp gross above net. 25 degrees ain't a small cam upgrade, generally we consider about a 5 degree bump as the...

Don't worry - in another couple of months he will be back with more threads about 318 pistons, 340 cams and why there aren't any museum quality cars for sale under 20k

Does this prove David Vizard's 128 lsa formula ?

That’s bad advertising, I’m not DV fan boy, but he’s probably had a big influence on how I think about performance engines since I got all his books. I’m sure you could do a lot worse and like for him for it’s about the whole car not just the engine. Funny thing when people recommend cams on...

    Comp's XE Cams

Agreed. Dan did ask about cams and does often. The largest cam I’d suggest for Dan (If he or anyone is asking or wondering) would be a 208@050 as it would not effect off idle performance when ether lightly pressing on the gas pedal or hitting it half way or full way down. The stock converter...

    Basic 318 Mods

Things to consider: Opinions vary on what is "spunky". It's hard for us to ration what is spunky to you. You have to determine what is spunky for you. I ran 15.9's with a stock 318 2bbl in a b-body. It would fry the tire through any intersection if I wanted it to. It was not my fastest 318...

    318 cam

This thread started out great. Way more informative than almost any other "318 cam" thread on the first 2 pages. Unfortunately it has now degenerated into the same old thing of bashing, and "max performance" talk. I just wish someone, anyone with more smarts than me could be bothered to take a...

    MPG build 360

Most stock LA 318 cams were 390 lift with 1.5 rocker. Duration was about 192 @.050 if memory serves. Stock LA 360 2bbl cams were 410 lift, cant remember exactly but I think about 202 duration. Some 4bbls may have had different cams certain years like with the E58 360's.

    Small Block Showroom!

This is the 1970 318 in my Dart. As a kid, I set it up with a competition cams 268H, single plane intake and Holley 750, and 360 J heads. Not the optimal combination for power, but it was still fun. Hopefully I get it running again!

    Big horsepower 318 builds

My guess it's mainly down to the heads, I'm think probably due to velocity and maybe the exhaust port is playing a role. I've been trying to figure it out also, lately.

    Big horsepower 318 builds

Yes and no. It’s a lot of boost. Double the sea level psi into the engine and you now have twice the engine size. 5.3 turns into a 10.6. Now how hard is it to make power with an engine size that large? The OEM cylinder head for the early engines even ported is behind a modern LS. Sub it out for...

    318 cam

Hi AJ, I think I've seen you write that you've ran the 318 cam in a 340 engine. What is the theory behind that? Thanks in advance.

    LSA Question

Because some topics (sarcasm!!!) turn into racing threads even though you want a very small upgrade on your cam. Congratulations Dan! You now have a Pro Stock cam for your stock 318!!!! Enjoy!!!

Making power out of the 318

I don’t bother recommending cams. For a long time now. It’s not the pissing matches that idk me but it’s ether splitting of hairs on similar cam specs or its wildly different and sometimes absurd cam recommendations. Now, if asked, directly or via a thread, it’s just a general recommendation...

What cam to use in a 318

The extra exhaust duration helps get more exhaust gases out and will add a few more rpm to a single patterned camshaft. Headers or not. I running this one in my 5.9 with the trick Hughes springs and retainers. (727/2500 stall, 3.55 gears.) Mellings makes OEM repops. Patents expire after...

    LOOKIN FOR PISTONS (318)

A stoker kit for a 318 is going to run you about $2K. If it was me, I'd keep the stock stroke and use the KB167's, put 1.88/1.60 valves in the heads and have them pocket ported/bowl blended and a Comp Cams 268H or something similar from Howard's Cams. If you know for sure you want a stroker, a...

    360 cam question

But it sounds like the op doesn't care about "more power' or "most gains" or "maximum" anything. He just wants a cam that works with his combo that has a "noticeable idle." Here's a 318 with a Whiplash cam. (I don't know which one) Sounds nice at idle. It probably smoothes right out at about...

    360 cam question

I get your point and not totally disagreeing or saying the OP should go with a big cam. Yes bigger cams extend the upper rpm powerband and make most gains on top but they also generally add decently in the 3000-5000 rpm range also making a lot more power then stock and decently over a smaller...
