What cam to use in a 318

I think I am going to go with Oregon cams, we discussed a few different options including re-grinding my vintage 318 cam that is good shape and made of better material. I like the idea of something not mass produced from who knows where.

    Good Cam Choice?

They're balancing a ton of factors. Drivability, emissions, fuel consumption, 300k miles durability expectations, on and on. These are actual inputs to design.

    Better Torque From A 318

I don't have a car at this time. I'm researching ways to improve both the torque and throttle response of a 318. I've always liked learning about ways to improve a engines performance. I've read that short duration cams are one way, but what about cylinder heads, what runner size, valve sizes to...

Hughes HUG1110P valve springs- anyone use them?

Just curious, what exactly were they doing? I'm interested in your guy's experience and thoughts on this. I got one of their cams recently for a relatively mild 318 build, and in reading up on it, it was very strongly recommended on their site to use only their springs and lifters.

    318 cam suggestions

Here we go again, another 318 cam thread and the guys that know a lot are giving their opinions. All good until their ego's get in the way and the thread takes a turn. To the op, read through the dozens of threads already written on the subject and compile your information. Contact some cam...

    318LA build

If rebuilding you can make measurements to find out and make any necessary mods to fit whatever cam you want. What you should be finding out what cams are gonna suit your build and if they require you to do mods to run them piston to valve and or retainer clearance etc.. Then you could decide...

    Roller cam - Magnum

I have 3 318's, 2 from -89 roller cams in cars & 1 solid from -77 sitting & while I was cleaning the roller lifters in one a guy said roller cam engines are Magnum engines... That pussled me as I never though so, what's the correct answer?

SBE 318 basic rebuild +CAM , INTAKE, HEADS, expectations?

The specs on the cam indicate improving low end torque and overall performance, win win for a low compression 318. I now several guys using the Whiplash, one with a 360 and another with a 400, both said the cam made the low compression engines into a different beast.

SBE 318 basic rebuild +CAM , INTAKE, HEADS, expectations?

True. My 273 Valiant was a nice highway car with 2.76 with a 26'' tire. But getting to 65 MPH seemed to take forever.Avatar photo. The 318 Belvedere I have now also has 2.76 with a 29'' tire has more grunt down lower. Both engines were stock bottom end and stock heads. Edelbrock Performer...

Hughes cams - feedback on their springs/lifters?

i like their products, but sometimes their customer service puts me off to the point of if i'm able to find it elsewhere i'll go that route. that being said, i like the fact that they offer a supporting cast for the star of the show and it is specifically designed to work together rather than...

Best cam for the street both power & sound

Hey everyone i am new here I recently bought a 71 plymouth duster roller no engine or trans I plan on building a mild 318 la that is choppy and has good torque and pep for the street and maybe some strip along with a 46rh trans and 3.23 or 3.55 gears Plan on adding Long tube headers Edelbrock...

    273/ 2 barrel camshaft options

I guess that depends on your definition of "smog motor". They had both with and without C.A.P. which is an early stab at smog control. Granted, the engines are built the same, but, are tuned slightly different. The carbs are jetted and adjusted slightly different too.

    Stroke a 318

honestly, if you're going to build a stroked 318, I'd start with an '85-91 block. they have factory roller cams, 302 heads. the roller cam is the biggie. you can get it reground, or get a roller cam and reuse the stock roller lifters at a much lower cost than the retrofit roller lifters...

Anyone Run a Crane Z-268-2 Cam in their 318?

I'm freshening up a 1974 low comp 318 with a quick hone, new plasma moly rings and new bearings. I done some home bowl porting & port matched the 675 heads with larger 1.88 / 1.60 valves. SCR will be around 8.5:1 with Mr Gasket 1121G (0.028") head gaskets. Using a port matched Performer intake...

    Nick's Garage dyno's a 318 Stroker.

There will always be those that discount the 318. It just didn't have the glory of the 340 because it didn't receive the cams, 4bbl, good manifolds... it was a grocery-getter. But for what the 318 will do, it's worth it. You can get cheap power from a 318. Try buying anything 340 cheaply. :D

    Another 318 set up

honestly, if you want a 318, try find a running 318 magnum. clean up the heads with a little bowl porting & 5 angle vj, trim the guides a skoash, get hughes #1110 springs, thin head gasket, rering, get the roller cam reground by bullet cams using their HR259/316 or HR259/326 lobes on the...

If you watch the Engine Master competition where the do odd ball engines like the 318 Poly, Nail head, old Cadillac, Chev 307 etc... Stop in for a cup of coffee

They were until they switched to roller cams after the 78 model year, at least the trucks I know for a fact were. Everything else switched to cast cranks in 73. That’s why it used to be a popular thing to swap in a 318 crank when rebuilding a 72/73 340 since it was a direct swap.

IM surprised by Richard Holdeners 360 Magnum camshaft swap.......

No 318 ever came with a 340 cam and very few 360 did, most 4bbl 360 had 2bbl cams.
