The Coyote is an entirely different format. Dual overhead cams, 4 valves per cylinder. It was BUILT as a high performance engine. The 318 was not. That doesn't mean the 318 cannot make power. It's just not on the same level of engine as the Coyote.

These are usually the correct size for 318-360 engines using hydraulic roller cams that need ball / cup pushrods.

if you're buying a new cam for a low compression 318 there are LOADS of better options than a 340 cam. can it be done, yes. also, there's only two 340 cams: 68 4spd cam and then the other one. which is... wait for it... also the 360 4bbl cam!

Nothing to do with higher lift cams. My Custom Royals had the same system, low compression export 361 engine. 1958-59 Plymouths sold here also used that system, 318 Poly engine with a 2 bbl carb.

Is that basically a 360-4bbl cam? I have a new Lunati voodoo in that grind but its .455 lift. Was going to use it in a 318 in a power wagon but will probably rebuild a 360 i have so might go a step larger on the cam.

I think with a 318 I would: do a 340 crank rods and some sort of zero deck or positive deck piston with X or J heads. However isn't there something where you cant open that 2.02 valve up too much or it scrapes the 318 bore? Other than that zero deck pistons with aftermarket closed chamber...

If you're taking the engine apart anyway, then why is it staying at 8.0, which is the 318's Achilles heel? and then start talking about 340 cams? which were designed for a high-compression engine? Just put some decent compression pistons in it right from the get-go. You won't be sorry.

Thing is, can you even GET the 360 2bbl cam anymore? I "just bet" the industry has consolidated all the stock cams the same.....and with our luck, they are all the stock 318 2bbl cam.

As for a 340 cam in a 318, we have all done it. Some of us have even paired it up with 360 heads, and their 318 ran great. In 1972 the advertised Comp ratio for a 318 was 8.6:1 and a 340 was 8.5:1. These numbers seem right to me, since the compression height is the same for 1972 318 and 340...
