    Runs a bit lean...

I think you guys were right about the jet flow. I took the carb off and gave it another once-over with the carb/choke cleaner. Any hole on that thing got a good spray. Its now holding idle in park and at the light. Naturally, the nature of the carb will function differently with a temp change...

    Runs a bit lean...

Not to my knowledge. The mechanic I go to is quite thorough and a vacuum leak wasn't even a concern. He assumed it was a fuel problem, hence the reason I replaced the upstream lines and filter (as well as a carb rebuild).

    Runs a bit lean...

After the head rebuild, I the slant in for a bit of professional maintenance. Timing was dialed in, compression (although I don't have the numbers from the test) came back in good health, and a tune-up was made. Something the matter, though, is that the carb (an early Holley 1920) is acting up...

    2bbl conversion for slant six

I'll hop on and bring up an additional point of curiosity. Which air cleaner would clear the hood? The stock /6 air cleaner won't fit the BBD, and the 318 air cleaner is too large for an A/C setup. What are you guys doing in this scenario?

    Troubleshooting Head Components

A quick question: I've reviewed a few videos online to mentally prepare myself for the installation, and I noticed half of the guys were adding oil through the oil galleries. Is that totally necessary? Or should I just pour in like usual?

    Troubleshooting Head Components

Allow me to rephrase. I understand the exhaust side runs hotter, but from the research I've made, mine has been running hotter than usual. Before upgrading the radiator and the fan, I was regularly on the verge of overheating. So far, I've only had one instance in the summer where I was getting...

    Troubleshooting Head Components

Just heard back from the shop. Milling went well and the bare minimum was taken off. Apparently the head wasn't as warped as I had initially thought. He took a good look at the rest of the head and found that the exhaust guides were all in rough shape, which may account for the reason they were...

    Whaddya think about these plugs?

For my own curiosity and for the OP, how many points hotter should it be? I've personally never tried this.

    Whaddya think about these plugs?

I've got a '74 slant that came with the 1945. It ran significantly better with a late 60's 1920. No more hesitation upon acceleration.

    Troubleshooting Head Components

Hey gang, just a thought while the head is being finished. Progress has been slow due to the freeze we had last week. In the meantime, I considered the sludge lingering on the oil pan side of things. Naturally, a change (as mentioned) is in order once the machine is back together. In order to...

    Troubleshooting Head Components

So far, I’ve only cut one knuckle in the process. Usually it’s eight. I’m liking the odds so far! lol I’ll keep everyone posted once it is finished. I’ll also post some progress on the block side if things.

When I see him again, I'll be sure to ask. Pretty sure he was going to focus on that one and potentially a few more if they are not as precise as he would like. I'm also certain it won't be incredibly invasive.

    Troubleshooting Head Components

Hey gang. I’m back. Update on the project is this: I took the head to a good family friend to get his ten cents on the subject. After some evaluation, we realized the exhaust valve guide on the 4th cylinder was giving us trouble, hence the severe build up and evidence in the exhaust manifold. He...

Spark plug drool tubes gaskets replacement

For the rest of you coming to this thread looking for more details, the part number from the '74 parts manual is Chrysler 1947 708. I'll follow up with more matches.

    Troubleshooting Head Components

Progress so far. Soaking the head today and sending it to the shop sometime this week. Eventually, I’ll give the pistons some TLC.

    Troubleshooting Head Components

As you see, the sludge is rather tremendous, but that is apparently a common denominator for many slant owners I’ve come to find out. Lol The same amount of carbon was found on the pistons, but the rings seemed to be in rather good shape.

    Troubleshooting Head Components

Kind of my thought on the matter, however, I didn’t know if that would have negative consequences considering I’m not toying with the block/pistons/rings/etc. Curious to know if there is a part number for those seals? I’ve got a parts manual from eBay, but some chunks are missing. I saw on the...

    Troubleshooting Head Components

It claims 67k, but I’m willing to bet it’s 167k based upon the wear. Besides a timing issue, it ran well. I haven’t removed the springs yet to see how the seals are faring. I had planned on cleaning and lapping the valves since it’s undeniable they need attention. I considered porting, but I’m...

    Troubleshooting Head Components

So is there a win in this situation without yanking out the whole motor? I don’t have that time or that money. I just wanted to replace a gasket for Pete’s sake. Lol

    Troubleshooting Head Components

Hey gang, Long story short, I took the head off to change the gasket in order to fix a problematic oil leak. Based on the stamped steel gasket, I don’t think this engine has ever been serviced since its birth in ‘74. As you can see, it’s been running hot for years. I finally got that problem...

    Valve Springs

Hey gang, I'm to a point where there isn't much more to do on the ride. It sounds healthy, drives healthy. My interest now is merely splitting hairs. I'm a bit bored and I also don't want to spend a kidney's worth of money. I've stumbled upon a few mentions of using different valve springs...

    9" Rear Drums

Sorry for the delay, everybody. I finally got around to taking the tire off and snapping some pics with state of decay and measurements included. Opinions and recommendations? In the following thread, I have an image of the 10” drum behind the rim. My second question is this: why did they not...

    9" Rear Drums

Curious to know who your "guy" is. I'm not looking to spend an arm or a leg. I just want them operational. Looks like what I have on there now is pretty generic (I've never replaced them during my ownership.. But I've replaced the front). Went through Classic Industries last time, but their 9"...

    Temporary Removal of A/C Compressor

Yep, that looks like the one! Sorry for my confusion. Heater core has been out of commission for nearly ten years. We have since directed the hose from the water pump with a smaller j-shaped hose. As for the a/c, I think you answered my question about mystery canister A. After googling an image...
