    8 3/4 to Dana 60

Thanks, sounds like it would still be a good project though for fun. I like the building almost as much as driving. Or I should say driving what I repaired. I think she may be deciding to sell her truck and I’m kind of wondering whether to buy it. It’s a long bed stepside needing quite a bit of...

    8 3/4 to Dana 60

My daughter in law has a late 70s 3/4 ton Dodge pickup truck that I think has a Dana in it. Is there a financial advantage in converting it to fit a Dart vs just buying a new setup?

    @pittsburghracer gone.

I am so shocked and saddened by this news. I am a relative newcomer to the site but quickly came to respect PBR. It is good to hear from you guys your affirmation of what a great guy he was, but I am not in the least surprised. You could tell it from his posts. RIP John

    What’s a Spadman.

I thought I would share with you guys not from mining areas what a spadman is. In underground mines the miners need to have something to keep them going in the right direction. Since mining equipment travels on the floor of a mine, the directional control needs to be in the roof. Surveyors...

    Intake perfect fit without gaskets.

The Permatex rep said use Permatex Optimum Gray. However, you guys have convinced me to cut the intake. I called Hensley’s near Dandridge TN. They are about 3 hours away, but I need to go close there next week anyway. They said I could call in advance and they could do it when I bring it in. I...

    Intake perfect fit without gaskets.

I don’t remember what I used but I was able to buy a product years ago that stopped a leak in my gas tank; so it is certainly possible. More recently, I used JB Weld on my 1998 Freightliner diesel fuel tank where it rusted through under a decal. It’s held now for 8 to 9 years.

I sent a note to Permatex. I’ll report what they say. Night all.

    Intake perfect fit without gaskets.

I went back to my shop just now and threaded in four bolts semi tight, with no gasket. All the bolts go in easily. I looked inside with a cheap Harbor Freight bore camera and saw no problems with alignment. The head has been gasket matched, but not the intake as yet so all I could tell is that...

    Intake perfect fit without gaskets.

Now there’s one great reason not to do it. Doesn’t Permatex advertise one impermeable to gasoline?

    Intake perfect fit without gaskets.

Yes, that is a good option of course. I’m just wondering if there’s someone out there who did it and it failed. Mechanic friends tell me OEM’s have used Silicone only but I have always used a gasket even if cut out myself. That said I pretty much always use some kind of dressing, including g a...

    Intake perfect fit without gaskets.

Yes, it sits too high even with the steel gaskets, though most of the bolts will start. Without a gasket all the bolts easily thread by hand.

    Intake perfect fit without gaskets.

I will be glad to report back if I do it. I just wasn’t wanting to be the first. I’m going to check the fit more to make sure I don’t have any major angle mismatch.

    Intake perfect fit without gaskets.

I’m glad yours worked out. Certainly an option but I would have to enlarge my steel gaskets’ port openings. The ones I have are smaller ports than the gasket I port matched to. I’ve thought about cutting a paper gasket out to match and dressing each side with a thin coat of black permatex, but...

    Intake perfect fit without gaskets.

Correction, upon closer examination it seems Permatex only recommends Permshield as a gasket dressing for an intake manifold.

    Intake perfect fit without gaskets.

You’re right, I can find a shop, either in TN or in Ohio, and I’ll be in both this month. But; my question is what’s wrong with using something like Permatex Permashield? They recommend it for intake manifolds. I know that one problem with rtv is getting a part back off; but other than that...

    Intake perfect fit without gaskets.

I don’t remember how much was taken off the intake side of my stock iron heads because it was years ago, but I milled the chamber side at least .060. I had test fit the intake before and thought it was going to be okay, but last night, getting ready to install it for good, it lines up the bolt...

    .480/230 cam in an 8.5 CR 360?

From the Comp Cams valve timing tutorial you can figure out your timing events after you study it a bit. It helped me. You can take the duration (total) and the installed angle to get the ABDC closing. It will be the installed angle plus one-half the duration minus 180. For example with my cam...

    .480/230 cam in an 8.5 CR 360?

It asks for the degree at which the intake valve closes ABDC (After bottom dead center) Type in your search bar “Comp Cams Timing Tutorial” and you can learn how to figure the closing angle.

    .480/230 cam in an 8.5 CR 360?

I can’t attest to its accuracy as I’ve not personally checked the math behind it. That said, it does give you an idea of how the dynamic compression increases with advancing a cam. I found it informative.

    .480/230 cam in an 8.5 CR 360?

Once you find what your actual static compression ration is go to here and play with the intake closing point to see a dynamic compression ratio. Wallace Racing: Dynamic Compression Ratio Calculator

Cooper Cobra vs BFG Ta's on 2nd gen cuda

It’s nostalgic for me. I lived through the transition to radial tires from original Goodyears. I lusted after TA’s but kept with cheaper then for lack of funds. Now I just want a day two look so I got a set of big and littles put on stock ralleys up front and 14 by 7 in back. May not like...

X heads and 340 dual plane cast intake. The car had been converted for drag racing with an auto and slap shifter. Luckily, the numbers matching 4 speed was in the trunk. It had some wear and the interlock spacer was missing. It is all rebuilt now and ready to go.

I was hoping it was a 1969 in case they were stouter then. Just to add to my meager collection of LAs(3). A 318, 340 and 360. I’m building the 360 right now.

BTW; the car was an original H code. I have the original title and numbers all match except block. Tranny and rear all match the car. I assume it is the original intake and heads.

    Mystery engine

I bought my 1070 Dart in 1988. I was looking in my old shop today at what I was sure was the engine in it; a 318 with the 340 intake and heads. What looks like a date ends in 89. Can’t be! It says it is a 318-2. Replacement block? What do you think.
