Well my point is/was ( with regard to the OP) use the stock 318 cam because installing a performance cam into an otherwise stock early 70s smogger 318 doesnt gan you much in the top end... I beleive its mainly because of the small port heads and small valves,

Correct. But how far does he want to go and how much money does he want to spend on a 318? Unless he's going to add a roller cam, some exotic heads, turbo or blower, he's not going to make a huge difference from what he has now. That's why I recommended sticking with what he has.

All that's true. What's also true is, not everyone wants a 360 in every application. THe 318 can get some really good mileage that's tough to get from a 360.

I know it's not cheap but I hope you get a chance to dyno it. Sounds like a fun combo.

on my 318 roller engine, the cam swap, 4 barrel carb intake really did wake it up, but it wasn’t until I put some magnum heads and long tube headers when the combo really came alive!

Also dont get a smogger LA 318 and expect to tune any more than the given 150 Horse out of it...same with any other mid 70s era smog engine. AND, unless you arepaying top dollar you can expect any Mopar engine in a car to be either A: needing a rebuild. or B: already been gone over who knows how...

Yeah, you start using more lung power with a stroker and you're gonna need better heads real quick.

Did you check PTV clearance on the new set up? I know you said you bore scoped it and all…but it’d be good to be sure. Also, what cam were you running on the 318? Did you degree it? My Victors have almost .200 valve drop (don’t remember exactly at the moment) on the exhaust…that exhaust timing...

honestly, if you want a 318, try find a running 318 magnum. clean up the heads with a little bowl porting & 5 angle vj, trim the guides a skoash, get hughes #1110 springs, thin head gasket, rering, get the roller cam reground by bullet cams using their HR259/316 or HR259/326 lobes on the...

Need a 340 cam or a tich more. Port the heads and use inexpensive LS 5.3 valves. 1.9"/1.55". You do need to install either the LS powdered metal guides or bronze guides, with the 8mm diameter. That also opens the door for beehive springs, retainers and locks. Go for it, only 22 CID difference...

I know there are scads of "318 cam" threads here. The op needs to read up on the volumes of information already written and compiled here. BTW, there are Melling and Sealed Power cams available for mild small block applications...

Nice! No doubt it would like a lot more cam with the converters and gearing, but at least you had the right mindset and optimized the drivetrain for the 318 incher. I’ve always liked the ‘62 Belvedere. If this is the temporary motor, what does the future hold?

Yes! Do it. Send it done. Absolutely go for it. Cam size determines RPM range that works in concert with your converter, gear ratio, tire size and cars weight to achieve the intended goal.
