    273 commando Build

That reminds me, I did re-torque back in the day with the steel shim gaskets (I had fenderwell headers at the time). Nothing high-tech either: i had the old beam style torque wrench.

I also noticed that problem with the ARP bolts and was very disappointed they were too short. Hard to believe (maybe not) this error could continue for so long a time.

    273 commando Build

What I used back in the '70's on my 273 Bracket Racer was a steel shim head gasket (most likely specifically for the 273 bore size) along with a copper wire I epoxied into a grove in the gasket that surrounded the cylinder bore. You may consider this a poor man's version of machining an o-ring...

Advance Auto parts is closing 700 stores nationwide.

Here in Mexico the Oreilly's are buying up other stores and one can find an Autozone in every town. Where I live I find recently d two more Autozone stores just opened, we now have no less than five (and they are rather close together)! Seems like overkill to me.

    Shipping Sold Vehicle to Europe?

Someone from England is considering making a bid to purchase my Valiant. I wonder how much he/she would have to pay to ship it there from California. Anyone have experience with the cost of such an arrangement? Thank you, just curious for now (shipping responsibility of the buyer).

[FOR SALE] 1965 Plymouth Valiant Signet Convertible $3,750

Just drive her $1,500 miles from La Paz, BCS, Mexico to Valley Springs, California (just east of Stockton). I will be in Valley Springs for a few more days and then driving up to Chico, California to visit a friend for about a week. If I don't sell it this trip, it will be stored in Valley...

Selling a Vehicle on EBay Could Be Problematic.

Ebay recommends not using PayPal to buy/sell vehicles because the paypal guarantee does not apply to large items like vehicles. PayPal recommends an escrow service. So I went to escrow.com to find the online registration for a vehicle sale requires a VIN with no less than 11 digits. Our 1965...

Early Abody Sheet Metal Replacement Parts Availability?

Well, that was disappointing, the ABS website does not even show the Valiant line on the list (except for Duster).

Early Abody Sheet Metal Replacement Parts Availability?

I guess I should know this already, after having purchased by first ABoty in 1973 (1965 Valiant four-door) but I don't. What body panels are available in the aftermarket these days? For example quarter panel, door skins, front fenders, cowl, floor and trunk pans. Or is it up to the fabricators...

Getting Ready for a 1,500 Road Trip

Arrived safe and sound in Valley Springs, CA from La Paz, BCS, Mexico last night (left on Monday at 2:00 PM). Distance was about 1,500 miles. Some parts looks like the 273 two-barrel got 20 mpg but in California traffic dropped to about 14 mpg. Had one incident where the needle and seat stuck...

Getting Ready for a 1,500 Road Trip

It's on Facebook Marketplace and also listed of FABO. I haven't left here yet. Maybe Tuesday morning I can get away. Update on engine stall yesterday: I checked the dwell which was a little low at 26 degrees. Then I changed the fuel filter and heater hoses. Then I noticed the rubber fuel line...

Getting Ready for a 1,500 Road Trip

Good idea but I'm pressed for time and want to take it slowly on the transpeninsular highway (there a sections with so many potholes one can't dodge them all).

    Fuel Gauge Accuracy

My fuel gauge in the '65 Valiant Signet convertible started working again. When the needle was exactly sitting on the empty line I filled up. The pump clicked off and the attendant asked be if that was good? I asked her to fill till it clicked off a second time. She pumped some more, the pump...

Getting Ready for a 1,500 Road Trip

No buyers for my '65 Valiant convertible here in Mexico, so i plan to drive it back to California next week. So far changed the oil/filter and air filter. Tomorrow will replace the heater hoses, fuel filter. Today purchased a spare fan belt, a used 14 inch tire for a spare (have all new rubber...

    Convertible Drain Tubes?

Getting ready for a road trip. My plastic rear window was so cloudy I unzipped a few months ago. Now it shrunk or something and I can't get it zipped back up. So now I'm thinking I better put things drain tubes in the correct place. Where do they fit? Thank you.

Machine Shop Did not Shim Valve Springs

Update: i have two sets of factory adjustable 273 rocker arms/shafts both reconditioned with bushing inserts. One set is "virgin" so to speak (no signs of grinding for spring interference problems). The other set shows signs of some (not all) rockers having been ground down slightly to improve...

Although I built my first small block Mopar (273) fifty years ago at Hartnell College Auto Technology class, (Salinas, CA) I am consulting the small block build articles by KrazyKuda as a refresher course while assembling a 340. I did not see any mention in the articles regarding cylinder heads...

Machine Shop Did not Shim Valve Springs

My task this morning was supposed to measure for new pushrods. But now I'm not sure if I was mailed the correct adjustable pushrods from Smith Bros. to measure what I need. It looks to me like the cup end of the adjustable pushrods they sent are just a tweak smaller than the factory 273 pushrods...

Machine Shop Did not Shim Valve Springs

Maybe you missed it in post above, I am using new valves (photo #2) and 1965 274 iron ductile adjustable rocker arms (photo #3). Machine Shop Did not Shim Valve Springs

I'm in Mexico, so perhaps "blueprinting" a Mopar is too much to ask. I asked the machine shop to install the new 340 factory style springs with dampers at installed height of 1.650". However, when I picked up the cylinder heads with valves/springs already installed they just told me all the...
