Sounds like a 2.xx gear won’t be great for cruising country roads at 40 mph.

For my 73 Swinger I have a high performance 360, 904 with stage 2 shift kit, and 8.75 with 355 gears. I was running 410 and switched to 355 which was a very nice change. I drive this car "a lot" and I've been considering using an even higher gearset. Pretty sure I would like 323 but thinking...

That’s interesting, I’ve been thinking about going the other direction, 355 to 323. The 355 is just a wee bit much for highway cruising.

If I need an alternator, starter, switch, etc. there are two local shops that rebuild these units. I would imagine there is one or more in your area. They take the core and sell you another unit or rebuilt yours.

Here’s a hint. Check the timing with a light.

Perhaps this is part of the problem…I’d be interested to know where initial timing is set.

Does it really matter whether a 1970 Swinger 340 is “numbers matching”? I can’t imagine it would make that much difference in the value.

Yes there are definitely more mpg to be gained, I was not babying it lol Double barrel carb with a dual exhaust, with those 323 gears you can really get lost.
