I have heard a truck do the same sort of thing when the 727 output shaft bearing was worn out. It growled and was pretty apparent when you listened to the floor right below you. Tom
I am glad to report that with the real input shaft as a pilot tool, the trans slid right into place. After a few hours of hooking things back up, it is out and on the road again. Brian T can update on how well it works.
Thanks to everyone for hopping on and offering advice and possible solutions.
Ready for another 54 years of service behind a 440 six barrel. Note: he did not want it to look as if it had been rebuilt so I removed the greasy loose stuff and left the 55 years of baked-on stuff. It's clean inside though!
The 68 cam enabled my 69 four speed 340 to run about one mph faster and with good traction, about .05 to .08 quicker (with other part relatively stock). It did take shifting a few hundred rpm higher but not much more than the automatic cam.
Offset center, 18", 2.25 in and out, stock. 68s were 2" in and 1 7/8" out. I bet this really choked the higher rpm potential power of the 340 four speed cars with the bigger cam.
Send it to the guys at Precision of New Hampton. I've had them do a stock 340 and a 440 six battle one for a Superbird and they came back as you would hope. Stock.
Thank you all so far. We plan to borrow a real input shaft from a local pal this week to line it all up.
Best we can tell, the fork should be 12" long for an a-body and Ill try to find the pivot distance from center on the stock bell housing and compare it to the aftermarket one.
I hope to...
Thanks for all the help so far.
Dave's drawing let me cut and paste too. The B&W modified version of yours, below, shows what my photo above shows. With bearing all the way back, with no trans in place, it is way off center. With it all the way forward against the finger, it is still off and...
Looks like the length from the bearing face to the pads is 1.625 on 23 spline and 1.70 on 18 spline. Which means fork must be different which then means it will be different disc release using the stock fork. I guess adjustment of the rod can make up for this. It looks odd to me, this is...
Yes it is HEMI four speed 18 spline. I think Brian slid the discs right on the splines. Talk to me about throwout bearings. HEMI units used different ones my 69 parts book shows. Anyone know the difference?

Comes with plastic one but my concern is there are three items that have to be exact. if the plastic one is even remotely down or up or sideways, it still lines up but the tighter fitting splines of the input shaft will not push through them and the pilot bushing.
With the trans not in the...
Working with my pal Brian to install his HEMI four speed through a dual disc Mcleod assy in a Quick time bell housing. I've done lots of four speed installs but never had one fight like this. Always single discs though. Can't seem to push it in no matter how many times he lines the discs. It...
I took one of my sets and enlarged the openings to hold 2.5" mufflers. It is relatively easy to do and enables you to still enjoy the stock stuff while running bigger mufflers.
Dad spent a very long career playing with his flowbench and heads and intake and exhaust system until he got very high numbers at low lifts. And it paid off with a highly responsive engine that flys from idle to 5800 and revs like a small Chevrolet with an aluminum flywheel. And it idles...
