    oil pump failed

long blocked and sleeved 340. Everything new but the valve train. Primed the new pump and got oil up top before buttoning it up and installing the motor. Started right up and sounded good. While working on getting up to temperature, I noticed the top end was kinda loud and then noticed zero oil...

    Replacing a crank shaft questions

My engine is a 1971 340 (august I think). Externally balanced. I have a manual for 1968 and the only thing it says regarding identification is whether I have a Maltese Cross stamped on the “numbering pad on the right side of the block” . It may have undersized one or more bearing journals by...

    Oil pump won't prime

if I tighten it to spec (30lbs) without a gasket, it jams the pump drive somehow. It turns fine in my hand and if I bolt it up hand tight. I'm thinking about going with a gasket to see if the extra space keeps it from sticking. (you know there are 6 threads on to use or not to use a gasket in...

    340 intake manifold

hey all: I'm thinking about going with the original manifold on this 340 but I have some questions. First it's a 71 and it has a 5/16 hole on the drivers side just behind the thermostat opening, between there and the carb. No threads just a hole?! I've looked at other pix and others have it and...

    not in the service manual

hey all: so the 76 360 had some sort of catastrophic misadventure, so I'm putting a nicely freshened '71 340 in it's place. I'm close to priming the oil pump and reading old threads I came across some chatter about a plug that is in the motor near the distirbutor. Can't find this plug. (or a...

    puzzler for ya

I pick'd this 68 cuda with a 76 360 up last April. You all are starting to know that I'm learning as I go. (thanks for your patients) About a month into it I take it down the road and decide to give it some gas, OK all it would take! and I thought it jumped time. Limped home and found a little...

    borrow some manifold vacuum

I need to run cooler when not moving. I understand that smoother idle can be obtained too (which i could use)from getting some neg. pressure from below the throttle plate. The only port in the manifold is connected to the carb however. Can I split that source between the carb and the distributor...
