    318 value

I wouldn't myself unless money wasn't an issue. If your car has a 318, it's easy to build it or build another bigger cube small block to go in the hole. If you build a big block car, you have to change a lot to make it work. Purely economics for me. Like I mentioned in another thread, I can...

Is building a stroked 318 better than a stroked 340/360?

In what way does this add drama and turmoil to the thread?? Isn't that what this is about now? :poke:

Is building a stroked 318 better than a stroked 340/360?

love the info and ideas on this build. have some updated info: A friend of mine needed a stock 318 for a driver. I'm going to give him one of my engines. The same friend has a contact with a 360 engine I can get for nearly noting and has speed parts on it. Decided to use the 360 block, pan and...

Is building a stroked 318 better than a stroked 340/360?

318s are low buck guy engines... if someone is seriously spending money to make power it makes sense to go 360 IMO. Most 318 arguments come back to cost at some point I'm sure someone mentioned it in this thread but I'm not going back through to find it. It is Irony to talk sinking money into a...

    New to Me 1968

. ~: ~: ~/ The '68 has a 318 and a 727 automatic. Understand that the most popular build for the 18 is 0.030 over, flat top pistons and a Zero clearance head, undestand that makes a high revving , stable 340 ci. As for the 727 they tell to put in a couple extra springs. Does that sound correct?

    273 dilemma

As long as you're not going for a mega horsepower build, you can use just about any 273/318 crank. Regardless of which one you get, I would rebalance. The '64-7 273 crank would be the same as what you have....forged and with the small converter register. A 318 can be found in either forged or...

    Compression Ratio and Boost Query

I agree with you in regards to the budget factor. As a matter of fact: That is what has lead me to this build. Backstory: I was building a parts grabber/daily Dakota pickup and I was gonna do an n/a LA build. My base ended up having a cracked magnum block at the freeze plug. Where I am at a...

Is building a stroked 318 better than a stroked 340/360?

if you want a vehicle that has enough power to be fun to drive without being concerned about racing the 318 would get it done most economically without stroking. If you are going to race, go bigger and stroke it. And if you are eventually going sell and move on to another project like most of...

How much can I bore the 318 to? I know it won’t be much but if I can get into the 330 CI range I’ll be happy

Stop in for a cup of coffee

I was up late working on my 318. Working on my next youtube video. I didn't think I'd be doing a 318 build but it was already on the engine stand from when I parted the car it came from. It's overhaulable. Honing is a long process but worth it to take your time and get it clean. 3.910 + a...

    3.9 Stroker

The main problem with 6 cylinders is you got 6 intake and exhaust ports, 75% of the power capability of a similar V8 head plus smaller displace gonna need more rpm to make power. A 375 hp 6 cyl is a similar build to a 500 hp 318/390. 300-400 hp is a decent range for a 318, which is 225-300 hp...

    SB vs BB who wins?

100%, to me the only reasons not build a 318 is if rpms/gear/stall is too much for you for hp/performance level you want. Not just for the 318 that basically goes for any engine.

    Best Gearing for 8 3/4 Behind 1970 Duster 318

...another 8 3/4 chunk and build it with 3.73-3.91 gears. That way if you want the highway gears back, there available as a spare. I had 3.91 gears , 255/60/15 rear tires and mild stall behind a mildly cammed 318 build a few years ago. Super acelleration, but 2800-3000 rpm at 65mph gets old real...

Making power out of the 318

i've built this engine. yes, it makes 400hp but just barely and if you look at the dyno results you'll notice that it has a narrow, peaky powerband. it's fun, but that wears off quickly if you've got a 4spd because you're always stirring the pot looking for that sweet spot of power. it makes...

Making power out of the 318

My advice to the OP if you are a 15 year old kid, and you build your 318 bottom end with 360 heads you'll lower compression but there are things you can do get pistons that com up to deck height as the 318s sit low and mill the heads... get it to 8.5 or 9 to 1 and run it .don't get too crazy...

    318 build suggestions?

Car is currently a 225/6, Clifford 6=8 4 bbl setup, 7.25 rear, 3.91 gears, 28” tires. Have a small block 904 to go with the new build. Other than that, starting at scratch, and around here, finding 340s or 360’s (complete) are like finding a leprechaun. Wish I had the scratch to but a nice...

Is building a stroked 318 better than a stroked 340/360?

X2 I have a fresh teen machine shop fresh, with some goodies 2.02 J heads, small cam, its a sacrificial lamb on my 6-71 build, find out what it will not take and then stick a really good forged engine under the 6-71.

    340 or 408?

There's a stock (4bbl & headers) magnum 360 vs 410 but they added almost 2 points of compression when they stroked it, it gain 29 hp, 305 hp vs 334 hp but obviously a chunk of it's from more cr. There's also a more performance build 360 vs 410 using same parts think it was Edelbrock headed, and...

Is building a stroked 318 better than a stroked 340/360?

So the whole thread has been bullshit? Or was it just bait and switch? Maybe the thread should have been called, ( Should I debate building a 318 base 4 inch stroke motor until I find a cheap or free 360 block to build a 4 inch stroke motor?) Its kinda like saying should I use my free 915 J...

dan, you keep worrying about port velocity and valve size and all this bullshit that won't matter one bit in what you're trying to build. zero. nada. zip. zilch. you're not going to buy a 318 and splash the pot for 340/360 valve heads, or edelbrocks, or anything like that. you're looking...

    Stroke a 318

I would not put a dime into a VW but a 71’ demon has alll my money. Won’t be the fastest but I bet when Im done it will beat my 2017 scat. If it beats my challenger then the ends are justified IMO.

Does this prove David Vizard's 128 lsa formula ?

There isn't a 1 formula fit's all Hemi builds or any other type of engine. Intended use and all variables involved will determine what cam or even type of cam to be best for combo, Ex you wouldn't get great results in a 318 with 106 cam 238 degree with 3.23 gears, even if the formula says so. or...

318-360 lock up torque converter swap

It matters a LOT where it is welded on and what size it is- that's how it balances! Take careful measurements where the weight is located on the 360 convertor, in relation to the offset convertor lug. Measure and mark the lockup convertor in the EXACT same spot. Then carefully grind the tack...

Making power out of the 318

The OP insist on two things he's unwilling to compromise so far 3.21 gears and 400 hp, everything else he's been open to. A 360 magnum will work better under these requirements. Not that I don't think he couldn't build a 400 hp 318 but don't think it's gonna work to well with 3.21 gears. Zero...
