You might not hate them, but you don't believe they can be made into a performance engine, so close enough, so how can you really help someone build one into something you think is impossible?

If you want to spend the money, you can make anything "perform". When I bought my 340 cuda in '69, did I want a 318 and have to build it or did I want a 340 that was already factory built with all of the suspension parts included? Doesn't make you a "cultist", it's common sense.

I got these head gaskets for a mild 318 build. They are .027 compressed, and a 4.040 bore size. I believe the Mr Gasket ones are a 4.140 bore size

You sure? Every guy that ever owned a 289 swears they spin to 9k even stock.... a 318 should be able to do it :) BTW.. why would you want a truck to spin over like 5500-6k anyway?

It sounds like you could build it as an LA but as cheap as LA 318's are, why bother. You can find LA Teens for $100 or less. Even better yet would be a Magnum with a roller cam. Just sayin.

No 318's whether poly or LA had a small register for the converter. That was a '67 and earlier forged crank slant 6 and 273 thing only.

Build a 360. Even with low compression it will be miles ahead of a 318. Then just swap it in when you’re ready. A B&M flex plate and a modified drivers Side engine bracket and your done. All your other upgrades will work better with it. Kim

Out of those 3 the xe268. I went with the smaller xe256 on my Jolopy 360 with 318 heads. It sounds decent runs decent, out of steam by 5k rpm but wasn’t build for rpm anyway it was a nice cruiser motor.

If you are serious about making power like a late model engine you need to disabuse yourself of the notion that a Chrysler head with standard rockers is worth spending a nickel on. If you want to build a 500 hp 318 with a small cam you use W2 heads or better. Anything else is just expensive...

as above run what you have and build as you can afford a better motor. if you can't find a reasonably priced 360 in your area to add a 4" stroker kit to (for 408") then a cheap 318 with the same 4" stroke doesn't give up much at 390". add ally heads of your choice/budget along with cam, inlet...

How did putting trick flows and a roller cam (~size?) work on the 318? I ask, because I've got a mechanically sound 318 and a core 360 in the shop corner. What kind of rpm do you spin the stock bottom end up to?
