    86 Black Roller 318, swap/interchange into 72 318

Searching for information on what would make the best interchange for these two blocks. Prefer to keep the Blue 72 and sell a bare black 86 block and heads. Would like to get adjustable rockers. Wonder if cams can swap/interchange over. Will be mated with a 72 904, 8.75 or ¾ 3.23 489 Thanks in...

Best cam for the street both power & sound

Plan on getting some late 60's closed chamber 318 heads, Edelbrock rpm intake, 3.23 or 3.55's 2000 stall So I would need a CR higher than 9.1?

    Sixpack on a 318 engine ?

I bet if the factory made a performance version of the 318 during the muscle car era we wouldn't be having these discussions. For some reason people have a problem not seeing an engine as a performance engine if there was not a factory one.

    Sixpack on a 318 engine ?

318 wasn't "made" to turn rpms because it didn't get the "good parts" like a 340. I've seen 318's turn 7200 rpms for years with stock bottom end. 340's havent' been made for over 50 years, folks are working with what they have or what they can get. It's ridiculous that we can't get past that...

IM surprised by Richard Holdeners 360 Magnum camshaft swap.......

Factory cams are so ridiculously small, you can make a decent upgrade and add good power from the very bottom and gain a few hundred usable RPM up top. cam specs from my 97 5.9 magnum were 250/264 duration w/ 398/401 lift - similar to early LA 318 cams.

    318 cam

What is the biggest cam you can put in a LA 318? I saw something about you can’t put high lift cams in them without grinding down the valve stem guides. Also, what mods other than springs will need to be done?

    Big horsepower 318 builds

Think the point is there a way to build a 318 to similar specs as the LS 5.3l and get similar hp and torque, Mainly with similar 217 or 221 cams they used with the 5.3l to get 500 + hp.

    Big horsepower 318 builds

Got it. My take was simply to make 500 horse. Frankly, I could give two pops about anything Chevy.

Steve Dulcich on building a budget 318

He done at least 3 different 400 hp 318 builds basically 225-245 cams, 9.7-10.5:1 cr, airgap headers, one with magnum heads one with ported 302 heads with 2.02 and one with older EQ then ported them out for 425 hp and and one just added xe262h cam and 4bbl and headers on stock low cr 318 for 282 hp.

What cam to use in a 318

I think I am going to go with Oregon cams, we discussed a few different options including re-grinding my vintage 318 cam that is good shape and made of better material. I like the idea of something not mass produced from who knows where.

    Good Cam Choice?

They're balancing a ton of factors. Drivability, emissions, fuel consumption, 300k miles durability expectations, on and on. These are actual inputs to design.

    Better Torque From A 318

I don't have a car at this time. I'm researching ways to improve both the torque and throttle response of a 318. I've always liked learning about ways to improve a engines performance. I've read that short duration cams are one way, but what about cylinder heads, what runner size, valve sizes to...

Hughes HUG1110P valve springs- anyone use them?

Just curious, what exactly were they doing? I'm interested in your guy's experience and thoughts on this. I got one of their cams recently for a relatively mild 318 build, and in reading up on it, it was very strongly recommended on their site to use only their springs and lifters.

    318 cam suggestions

Here we go again, another 318 cam thread and the guys that know a lot are giving their opinions. All good until their ego's get in the way and the thread takes a turn. To the op, read through the dozens of threads already written on the subject and compile your information. Contact some cam...

    318LA build

If rebuilding you can make measurements to find out and make any necessary mods to fit whatever cam you want. What you should be finding out what cams are gonna suit your build and if they require you to do mods to run them piston to valve and or retainer clearance etc.. Then you could decide...

    Roller cam - Magnum

I have 3 318's, 2 from -89 roller cams in cars & 1 solid from -77 sitting & while I was cleaning the roller lifters in one a guy said roller cam engines are Magnum engines... That pussled me as I never though so, what's the correct answer?

SBE 318 basic rebuild +CAM , INTAKE, HEADS, expectations?

The specs on the cam indicate improving low end torque and overall performance, win win for a low compression 318. I now several guys using the Whiplash, one with a 360 and another with a 400, both said the cam made the low compression engines into a different beast.

SBE 318 basic rebuild +CAM , INTAKE, HEADS, expectations?

True. My 273 Valiant was a nice highway car with 2.76 with a 26'' tire. But getting to 65 MPH seemed to take forever.Avatar photo. The 318 Belvedere I have now also has 2.76 with a 29'' tire has more grunt down lower. Both engines were stock bottom end and stock heads. Edelbrock Performer...

Hughes cams - feedback on their springs/lifters?

i like their products, but sometimes their customer service puts me off to the point of if i'm able to find it elsewhere i'll go that route. that being said, i like the fact that they offer a supporting cast for the star of the show and it is specifically designed to work together rather than...

    273/ 2 barrel camshaft options

I guess that depends on your definition of "smog motor". They had both with and without C.A.P. which is an early stab at smog control. Granted, the engines are built the same, but, are tuned slightly different. The carbs are jetted and adjusted slightly different too.

    Stroke a 318

honestly, if you're going to build a stroked 318, I'd start with an '85-91 block. they have factory roller cams, 302 heads. the roller cam is the biggie. you can get it reground, or get a roller cam and reuse the stock roller lifters at a much lower cost than the retrofit roller lifters...
