    Small Block Showroom!

This is the 1970 318 in my Dart. As a kid, I set it up with a competition cams 268H, single plane intake and Holley 750, and 360 J heads. Not the optimal combination for power, but it was still fun. Hopefully I get it running again!

    Big horsepower 318 builds

Yes and no. It’s a lot of boost. Double the sea level psi into the engine and you now have twice the engine size. 5.3 turns into a 10.6. Now how hard is it to make power with an engine size that large? The OEM cylinder head for the early engines even ported is behind a modern LS. Sub it out for...

    Big horsepower 318 builds

The LS heads are far better than most heads for a SBM.

    Big horsepower 318 builds

My guess it's mainly down to the heads, I'm think probably due to velocity and maybe the exhaust port is playing a role. I've been trying to figure it out also, lately.

Some of those LS heads are just that good. They really are.

    318 cam

Hi AJ, I think I've seen you write that you've ran the 318 cam in a 340 engine. What is the theory behind that? Thanks in advance.

Making power out of the 318

I don’t bother recommending cams. For a long time now. It’s not the pissing matches that idk me but it’s ether splitting of hairs on similar cam specs or its wildly different and sometimes absurd cam recommendations. Now, if asked, directly or via a thread, it’s just a general recommendation...

    LOOKIN FOR PISTONS (318)

A stoker kit for a 318 is going to run you about $2K. If it was me, I'd keep the stock stroke and use the KB167's, put 1.88/1.60 valves in the heads and have them pocket ported/bowl blended and a Comp Cams 268H or something similar from Howard's Cams. If you know for sure you want a stroker, a...

    LSA Question

Because some topics (sarcasm!!!) turn into racing threads even though you want a very small upgrade on your cam. Congratulations Dan! You now have a Pro Stock cam for your stock 318!!!! Enjoy!!!

What cam to use in a 318

The extra exhaust duration helps get more exhaust gases out and will add a few more rpm to a single patterned camshaft. Headers or not. I running this one in my 5.9 with the trick Hughes springs and retainers. (727/2500 stall, 3.55 gears.) Mellings makes OEM repops. Patents expire after...

    360 cam question

But it sounds like the op doesn't care about "more power' or "most gains" or "maximum" anything. He just wants a cam that works with his combo that has a "noticeable idle." Here's a 318 with a Whiplash cam. (I don't know which one) Sounds nice at idle. It probably smoothes right out at about...

    360 cam question

I get your point and not totally disagreeing or saying the OP should go with a big cam. Yes bigger cams extend the upper rpm powerband and make most gains on top but they also generally add decently in the 3000-5000 rpm range also making a lot more power then stock and decently over a smaller...

    Stroker advice

Okay I crashed the dart into a telephone pole after I lost all braking. So I took the entire car apart and I have the engine pulled looking to make more power. I recently bought a COMP CAMS KIT I’ll post a picture below of the specs. Im just wondering what 390 stroker kit is best for my 318 with...

    Roller Block Cams?

Yeah no worries it is definitely either a 1990 or 91 block that I pulled out of a 1981 D300! I have the roller lifters and spider hold down that came with it. When I first discovered the cracked heads were magnum heads I initially thought I had a complete magnum motor. A few years later I...

    Edelbrock heads with OEM manifolds

Sounds like ya got it whipped. Excellent. I never had to deal with that kind of heat you have. I have to agree that the aluminum does run cooler. This was in lower New York. What kind of fan are you running?

    Edelbrock heads with OEM manifolds

9.5:1 on the Aluminum head cars. Had 8:5:1 on my stock steel head 318. All run plates to allow 18 degrees idle and 30 all in. Cams are all low duration hitting around 7.5 dynamic and 185 PSI cranking (the cast head build was lower) My car with the stock cast heads and low compression pinged...

road car cam for my 318

What are the current specs on your cam? Go to answer is: get a custom cam. Racer Brown and others. You may be able to regrind the one you have since you are going smaller. I used to get 25 mpg+ steady cruising with a 340 cam and a TQ in a 273. Using a vacuum gage helps to teach you how to...

    318 comp cam

12 second bracket, not a good choice with your running gear. What car? That or one step larger at max. The manual can handle the next size up depending on what it is & the compression ratio of the engine now.

Magnum Exhaust Manifolds in an A Body

...maybe 318 manifolds... So to recap, I'm building a fun 71 Demon. Dropping in a nice warm magnum 318, with a 4bbl and nice '340' cam, and an A-833od 4-speed, and 3.23 gears - just a nice clean-running hot street machine that cruises perfectly on the highway and idles with a bit of lope -...

    Disappointing dyno results

That is NOT "installing" a performance cam. Performance cams (or really, even stock ones) need to be checked. Google up "degreeing a cam" There are lots of websites and videos, some by the am manufacturers on doing so. I helped a guy REALLY wake up a 318 that was nearly 12* off...

302 heads-Is it worth putting them on a stock 318

Depends on what year your Stock 318 is? '68 & '69 are the stock 230 hp 9.2:1 compression engines. Same with the '89 - '91 318 roller engines 9.2:1 cr and these come from the factory with the 302 closed chamber heads. Both of these engine years perform well and run very nice with the stock...

    Disappointing dyno results

I was at the mercy of the cam supplier. As I said, not a cam guy. Got tired of reading comments on cams so did the best I could. Still at a loss and don't know what to do. If I were to purchase another cam would be the same story. Thanks for your comments.

Thought I explained the cam was degreed. Why am I getting blasted on doing so?

Stop in for a cup of coffee

I’d look at something similar to the Eddy Performer RPM or just plain Performer cam kits. Both are relatively mild cams designed for stock heads. At least in small block fashion.

    Better Torque From A 318

First, you need a car. You should tailor some mods with a car in mind, like 66 down or 67 up. Any 318 will make a really nice street car. What do you want. All around, drive anywhere, pump gas, decent mpg? Think a 340 Duster? NO special parts needed. 318 short block, 360 heads, cast 340...
