2022 Sunbust Mopar show, anyone here going?

It’s this weekend August 21 at Frontier park in Graham. I will have the black 68 Barracuda. Would like to plan some upcoming ‘power cruises’ around the less traveled roads if anyone is interested. Thanks Nates68

Confused what to do with a 5.9L serpentine setup

Confused what to do with a 5.9L serpentine setup

It’s pretty close but it would have to take a bracket failing or something major for it to hit, plus the rubber cover makes it look closer. I was concerned the weld would pull apart but it was fine. I have used the same technique on header clearance issues, looks cleaner than the sledgehammer...

Confused what to do with a 5.9L serpentine setup

On that valve cover, a socket hit with a hammer made a nice u shape spot for clearance. I have the same ones, just put a thick rubber boot over the connector as well.

‘A’ Family Affair: 67 Dart and 68 Valiant restorations

Stay tuned, it’s about to get more interesting, and this time it’s not my fault... it’s Fe2O3.

‘A’ Family Affair: 67 Dart and 68 Valiant restorations

So we pulled the rocker shaft off and cleaned it up, cleaned the oil passage that flows up from the rear most rocker bolt (it was sludged up) and put some straight pushrods in. And guess what? The compression is around 150 on all cylinders. Gave it a tune up and runs good!

‘A’ Family Affair: 67 Dart and 68 Valiant restorations

Checked compression and a few cylinders were hardly reading, dang! Pulled valve cover and some of the valves were stuck open and the pushrods were a nice ‘S’ shape. So lesson learned, I should have pulled cover prior to cranking and oiled everything up and checked for stuck valves, I was too...

‘A’ Family Affair: 67 Dart and 68 Valiant restorations

Now that the car is white again we thought ‘hey let’s see if it will start’ It only sat for 27 years (previous post said 20 but I was guessing, last tabs are from 93). Hooked up a temporary gas tank, got some oil flowing and got some good backfires! It was trying but needs a tune up badly.

So usually the first thing we do to a project car around here is pressure wash and degrease. This thing was filthy...

‘A’ Family Affair: 67 Dart and 68 Valiant restorations

I had talked to the seller and even did a video call. It was an estate sale so car had sat in a barn next to house for 20 years (yes a real barn find). We made a plan to meet, yes! I was finally getting another Valiant. But then the next day I was texted that another family member had others...

‘A’ Family Affair: 67 Dart and 68 Valiant restorations

Moving on to our other project, the 68 Valiant! I really thought it was going to be sold out from under us but persistence paid off. Here’s the story: About 12 years ago I picked up a decent 69 Valiant 2 door, it sat in our driveway while I worked on my 68 Barracuda and remodeled our previous...

‘A’ Family Affair: 67 Dart and 68 Valiant restorations

The bumpers were rusty and dented. 67 rear bumpers are impossible to find. We got them straight (with some persuasion from fire!). Dart bumpers have lots of weird angles contours. Sanded them well and sprayed epoxy. Will paint a metallic silver or charcoal.

‘A’ Family Affair: 67 Dart and 68 Valiant restorations

I prefer the look of single stage on solid colors (non metallic) and it’s easy to repair if there is damage. Also, I hate dealing with clear coat issues as the paint ages (peeling, blisters, etc).

‘A’ Family Affair: 67 Dart and 68 Valiant restorations

And... It begins, it’s white! It’s Southern Polyurethane single stage. Son is happy we are finally at this stage, I hate to tell him the color sanding and buffing is needed to make it really nice.

‘A’ Family Affair: 67 Dart and 68 Valiant restorations

Got the high build on entire car, will block it down and next will be the topcoat! The emblems and trim were junk and he wanted a clean look so it was welded up at the start of all this.

‘A’ Family Affair: 67 Dart and 68 Valiant restorations

Moving onto the bodywork, this car had dents and waves everywhere and was repainted poorly over bondo. We sanded one panel down at a time, got it straight with minimum or no filler, then repeat on the rest of the car. The body lines on Darts are a real pain! My Barracuda was much easier with...

‘A’ Family Affair: 67 Dart and 68 Valiant restorations

Alright so remember this is all previous work, just updating until we get to the present. The slant wasn’t exactly speedy so we swapped in a super six intake, Holley 2bbl carb, and installed 2 1/4” exhaust. Also cleaned things up a bit. It was definitely an improvement but the Holley took a bit...

Confused what to do with a 5.9L serpentine setup

You will need to either internally regulate the magnum alternator (what I did) or use a electronic mopar one. The diesel truck guys have been internally regulating because the factory harness has it in the ecu and it fails. There’s a kit, I can’t recall the part number. Nates68

Confused what to do with a 5.9L serpentine setup

Oh and my noisy borgeson box was over boosted with the van pump. I put in a 2.0 gph flow control valve from jegs. It’s better but still a bit light even with 7 degrees of caster!

Confused what to do with a 5.9L serpentine setup

Here’s my 68 barracuda with the van bracket and magnum 5.9 truck brackets on everything else (it’s the ac delete alt bracket). Works great. I did relocate battery to trunk, which I assume you will too with your build. Nates68

‘A’ Family Affair: 67 Dart and 68 Valiant restorations

While we had the k member out we cleaned it up and fully welded all seams and boxed in the steering box area, reinforced the lca holes, and fabricated parts so it could use a 68 idler arm.

‘A’ Family Affair: 67 Dart and 68 Valiant restorations

Next major problem was the suspension and brakes were all junk. I had a disc brake swap we didn’t use on my 68 Barracuda so we used it along with all new bushings, ball joints, etc... Picked up a cheap 7 1/4 big bolt rear so we could run the 15” steel road wheels and fresh tires. My son quickly...

Engine Masters Episode 77 - TorqStormed Slant - Spoilers?

2 of our 3 mopars are slant 6 cars. We have crunched the numbers and talked about a boosted 6 vs. a mild v8 many times. The v8 wins in most scenarios and has instant torque, but the boosted 6 is fun and interesting. I would only add forced induction with efi. It was cool that they actually did...
