AJ's Opinions; for the Teener Street guys. You know; zero to 60 and a decent cruise rpm.

Big red X But you only now how to build one engine!!!!! And assume the rest about “US Other Guys.” Prove it! (Nevermind, you can’t.) OPS! You fell for the bait! LMAO! The most uneducated person (completely blind) following a modestly intelligent guy. (Light build on low) Listening to this...

Tell me about this 273 and tranny.

The LA318 was introduced in 1967. There were some poly engines that had hydraulic lifters. I used to have a couple. I'm trying to remember what they came out of.... industrial or marine application probably.

    Better Torque From A 318

I looked up in the mopars master engine catalog and they call for mopars .508/292* cam for a 13 second 13, I think that a flat 13 can be obtained with less cam as that information is probably 25 years ago.

    318 low-rpm performance ........... for the NEWBE

You look at the parts list for a 400 hp 318,340,360 it practically the same, around 10:1 cr, 230 to 245 cam, airgap 750 headers and magnum or x heads or mild ported 2.02 360 heads or 318 heads ported to flow similar, or SM, Edelbrocks with maybe slightly less cam. Don't get this cost issue.

    318 low-rpm performance ........... for the NEWBE

Why do these always turn into: A- don't do anything to a 318, because it's useless, unless.... B- change the heads, install a 4000 RPM converter, change the bore, install a .700 lift cam, and 5.13 gears.

Need recommendation for a Carb for better MPG!

...I wonder. When people asked, I popped the hood and showed them my Hi-compression big-bore 318. Man you should have heard that thing. The 318 cam, is not the bad-guy in that 318 engine. Rather, the bad-guy is the extremely low cylinder pressure. Would I build a hi-compression 340 with a 318...

Best cam for the street both power & sound

Normally I’d razz ya a bit here calling you a 318 hater, but yea, with an inexpensive 5.9, instead, miles ahead. First intelligent thing you said in months.

    Basic 318 Mods

Wish me luck as I'm going to be checking out a couple of duster's next week. I'm only asking these questions as a quide, both are 318 cars but one is a 2 barrel. Once the car is home I'm going to check it out completely and if everything checks out okay I'd like to do a 4 barrel swap and was...

Low Compression/High Boost and Pump Gas

I built a sacrificial lamb for testing of the roots engine for my 70 Challenger. Built it out of what I had laying around out of old 318. Dipped the block, new cam bearings / soft plugs. Had the crank turned, honed the cylinders. New rings, opened up the ring gap. Grabbed a set of 2.02 J heads...

    Sixpack on a 318 engine ?

Speaking from experience here..... I put a 6 pack set up on the 318 in the 69 Fury ragtop that I had for 17 years. All stock original long block, except I put a 68 340 cam in it. Stock convertor and 3.55 gears. That land yacht would still pull 18mpg if I kept my foot out of it.. not a rocket...

    Big horsepower 318 builds

So quick question. There's a few "brand x" 5.3 builds up on YouTube by our beloved Richard holdener. In his usual style he gets a junkyard engine and tops it with heads cam and intake to get to a desired power level. In one of them he's getting 500+ with a pretty mild BTR hydraulic roller...

    5.9 build

In the video he states that it was on a Mustang dyno. I looked it up and they are chassis dynos so this is rwhp. I have to clarify, the 411 lbs/ft was just one of two similar 408 Magnums he talks about. Both 10.3:1, PIE stage 1 heads, Kegger mods…Difference is cam. The other engine is more...

    Fuel pump eccentric problem

Provide more details. Original cam or replacement? Long snout cam or short snout? Original washer setup or replacement? Maybe even post a picture of the cam gear before the washer and bolt are installed.

Can someone help with this cam ID?

I'm just wondering if its too much cam for my build. Some of the reading I've done is saying that cam is only making about 9" of vacuum max. I need a bit more to run my power brakes. So, that is also weighing on whether or not I choose something else. I just don't want to over cam. For...

    318 low-rpm performance ........... for the NEWBE

    So to get the stock 48* on a 250 cam would be 180 + 48 = 228, 228 - (250/2) = 103 + 4* (advance) = a 250 cam on a 107 lsa and 41* overlap, DV formula recommends a 107.6 lsa, you could make a pretty decent cam for a 318 with a 250 on an 107 lsa no reason to say no cam upgrades, and I'm sure you...

    Stroked 318 power

Don't know about cheaper, since the 380hp crate is the same as a 5.9l from a junk yard just with an aftermarket cam and intake. Saying that I'm not knocking the 318/390 it's a cool little build most be happy with especially with a set of headers, just thought if you were thinking about a...

    Summit small block cams

I had the same experience with a 318. I believe its the heads holding it back 318s though the lift of the stock cam is just under .400 so it is a bit of an upgrade.

    318 cam suggestions

2000 stall is stock would work with a mild cam, but a mild cam might be too much with your possible cr to run on pump gas, meaning you might need to run a fair size cam which will want more stall and gears. Even a fairly mild cam would benefit more stall and gears in a 318.
  21. Swinger 340

How much would you pay for this 340?

I agree toolman, I think it may be a 318 out of a truck or van, by the shape of the oil pan. I would also assume the heads are from a later SB and not a 340. No X,J,O or U castings on the heads.

IM surprised by Richard Holdeners 360 Magnum camshaft swap.......

The 268/.485 spec cams have been used for all applications for years. I put one in my 454 Chevy powered tool truck years ago. In an engine that big you couldn't even tell it was bigger than stock specs. If you put that cam in a 360 it's a RV cam. You put it in a 318 and it's a hot street cam...

AJ's Opinions; for the Teener Street guys. You know; zero to 60 and a decent cruise rpm.

For example... my 318 (4bbl w/summit cam) with 2.76's, stock torque converter and exhaust manifolds turned the same time and mph in the 1/4 mile as a factory '73 340 Duster with 3.21's. I was very happy with that :) Cruise 75 mph all day if I wanted to also :)

    Fuel pump eccentric problem

Depends on the original application of the cupped washer- I know of at least 3 different depths that were used. Deepest was on the LA 318/360 roller cam engines. They were the deepest because they used a long snout cam and no fuel pump eccentric. Middle depth is a "normal" LA motor with long...

IM surprised by Richard Holdeners 360 Magnum camshaft swap.......

No 318 ever came with a 340 cam and very few 360 did, most 4bbl 360 had 2bbl cams.

What is the horse power benefits

Without good heads, a stroker won't get you much. Good heads, decent cam, improved compression can get you 325-350 out of a stock stroke 318. And in case you were wondering, John's 318s, stocker type, make somewhere around 400-500 depending on stock eliminator or super stock.

Anyone Run a Crane Z-268-2 Cam in their 318?

I'm freshening up a 1974 low comp 318 with a quick hone, new plasma moly rings and new bearings. I done some home bowl porting & port matched the 675 heads with larger 1.88 / 1.60 valves. SCR will be around 8.5:1 with Mr Gasket 1121G (0.028") head gaskets. Using a port matched Performer intake...
