    2 barrel to 4 barrel

AJ’s advice works if you drive like AJ slow and shift by 3000 rpm’s :)

    Whiplash cam. Your thoughts

Isn't the Whiplash a poser cam? It idles like a top fueler but smoothes out at 2500 and sounds like grandma's 318.

What cam to use in a 318

No. I’d recommend that cam with a minimum of a 2,500 stall converter, & a min of 3.55 gears with the typical 727/904 trans.

    2 barrel to 4 barrel

Even on a stock 273 2 barrel engine. You have to remember a 318 has a very small hydraulic cam with no lift and no duration. 50 hp requires more compression, cam change, as well as the little things that all add up. Still a worthwhile upgrade. The only car I liked with a 2 barrel carb was my...

LA 318 Cam / lifter gut check

"I think the wise move would be to go with a roller cam and factory roller lifters, spider, dog bones and pushrods, assuming the pushrod holes in the cylinder heads are big enough." _______________ I would think unless he is using the 302 closed chamber heads with the large pushrod holes to...

IM surprised by Richard Holdeners 360 Magnum camshaft swap.......

Or say the other way around, if you took a 650 hp 408 and replaced its say 260 @ 0.050" cam with a stock 318 cam you wouldn't expect to lose over a hundred hp probably a couple plus hundred hp ?

    Big horsepower 318 builds

Question for the head porting experts: Would a well ported set of heads (like Edelbrock or SM) and a well matched intake get you there? 5 hundo HP with a 318 and say, a solid roller cam with sub 230 degrees or duration?

Best cam for the street both power & sound

Old style grinds. Lots of advertised duration and not a lot of lift. Easy on valve train and springs.

Best cam for the street both power & sound

And the OP has a 318. He needs to be mindful that a stock teen can't use much of a cam without modifications.

    Magnum and Wiring Swap

I went from a 318 TBI to a 5.9 SMPI and for me the bottom end torque difference was night and day better. Even pulls a steeper hill in OD without kicking down now. Completely different rig.

How far in the hole 318 pistons

How about searching out an '89 - '91 roller 318, or the earlier '86 - '88 roller 318? The generation of 318 Roller Cam engines all came with the flat top pistons .040 ths down in the hole at 9.2:1 c.r. stock without even having to touch them. With the factory 302 Closed Chamber heads with the...

    Stock 5.2 Vs 318 with XE262

I am currently running a stock 5.2 magnum in a D150. Headers, Carb, Port matched. Just finished building a 318 with XE262 Cam. Stock 89 short block, port matched. Do you guys think the 318 with the XE262 cam will make more noticeable power compared to the stock 5.2?

Sadly i'm still putting the car together... so i have only driving it bout 50ft at a time to move it :) Hoping to drive it before winter.. it sounds amazing though... not that that matters....

    Been awhile

*wearily* you... you missed the "best cam for a 318" discussions and if you can make horsepower with a 318 fear not, there will be another, likely by the end of the week. the battles continue as the war is not yet won...

    Sixpack on a 318 engine ?

And it was still junk. Crushed many a Camaros with a 318 Duster. All I heard was slurping snot and tears of how they lost to a super expensive 340 Duster.

New to mow par x ford guy

That ‘87 318 is a good motor, especially if it’s a roller. Put a good intake, carb, headers, mild cam and dual timing chain with a metal gear on it and it will move that Dart around just fine. If you decide on the 360 just remember it’s externally balanced and the 318 is internally balanced

    340 cam change

...original apart, and subbing in an 039FellPro, about a minute with a calculator will point to about 9.6 in the real world today. BTW I put a 318 cam into one of those back in the early 70s, and it was ferocious on the street in my 65 Valiant wagon. Oh, I forgot to mention that I installed 318...

Making power out of the 318

Where are examples of these "Cheap hot rods?" and timeslips? Tony's fans say this is what Hotrodders did I recall they swapped in Cadillac and Lincoln v8s into smaller coupes and roadsters so whos rewriting the books here? the 318 guys will go back to cam, heads, 4 barrel and headers with the...

    Valve Spring Recommendation

they shouldn't (famous last words). per their specs they're set up for hydro cams up to that lift, so i'd assume you're in the clear. and they're single spring. color me jealous, that's one of my favorite cams for 318's ETA: the 60779 has single springs and is for flat tappet. 60775 is for...

    225 head pipe

Unfortunately just opening up the exhaust system on a slanty is not going to wake them up from the dead. Unless you go high compression and cam like Rusty did. Had the '78 225 factory 2 bbl setup and the '76 225 1bbl with the best factory cam. No comparison when going to stock 318 with a 4...

Lower control arm parallel to ground - alignment problems?

Lets get something straight, > I'm not being mean towards the owners of 318s, > nor to 318s in general, > nor especially to 318s with 160Plus psi, > just those 318s, in what may have started out as 108 to 115psi, and now with a big cam, is pumping less than 95psi. I been there; nothing sux...

    318 Build? Help!

I just never had any luck with 360's . Melted many pistons with a stock bottom end. Never had any that impressed me when it came to endurance. Smaller mains , Externally balanced, junk pistons, small main caps like 318 but longer stroke, That never made any sense, I would rather build a...

    318 build suggestions?

I agreed with most of what you basically said if I remember right. Just took issue that a 318 gonna need 21° more cam, like I pointed out a 400 hp 318 needs about 230° cam so if a 400 hp 360 needs 21° less cam would make it a 209° cam and I don't see to many of those. Besides the cam degrees...

    Installing small cam in Stroker?

Yeah and anything over 250hp from a stop is already spinning the tires; and a streeter like me, up here in Manitoba, is risking losing his driving privilege's, and hefty fines, every time I top out Second gear, spinning all the way. But you know, a small-cam stroker at 5000 ft, could/would be...

Dust off your crystal ball and GUESS the horsepower !

I have been asked to build a car for my nephew. We are using a Duster, either a 71 or a 74, it has yet to be determined. I have one of each and both will require about the same amount of work to the body. Normally, I default to a 360 for the A bodies that I have built to sell because in stock...

SBE 318 basic rebuild +CAM , INTAKE, HEADS, expectations?

While a 360 would be ideal in my case as well, I may do a little something to this 318 I have in my 68 Dart. At least the top end can transfer over to a fresh 360 short block. I’d like to maybe do a top end setup on this 318 just to see how well it runs. No HP or ET in mind for a goal.. just for...

How would you rebuild this 318?

I have a knock in my 318. Its definitely a lower end knock. My guess is a connecting rod. This is what I have; Bored .020 over stock pistons, rods, crank Compression ranged from 138 - 143 when I last checked it Comp cam XE262 262/270 duration, 462/470 lift 302 casting heads milled to 58 cc...

    318 question?

Thanks Bewy! You may be correct, I wasn’t sure about what cam it had in it so I took it to a machine shop friend of mine and he didn’t know what brand the cam was but he measured the lift and said it was slightly under what a standard LA cam was. Didn’t write the numbers down but he said it was...

    Never mind

@thecatsfan KB-191 is a 3.58 crank stroke slug not usable with a 319 & a 3.31 stroke crank. The OP should use the slugs he has and let the machinist do his work fitting them in the new bored out cylinders of equal height and use the appropriate gasket thickness to achieve what he needs as...
