    Fresh carnage!

I agree with 72B&B, no Loctite on the cam plate bolts. Bottom one walked out, trashed the gear and probably jammed between the chain and sprocket or the chain and timing cover and blew the side of the cover out.

Doesn't that have a timing chain tensioner on it?

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

Find and watch the David Vizard Powertec 10 video on timing chain tightness. A real snug chain can cost power. Slightly loose may be good for 5 to 10HP. 10k miles, that chain looks OK to me, but if you areconcerned, you should be able to get a replacement chain.

Bottom timing gear for crank how loose

Putting together a 1969 383 and was about to do the timing chain when I noticed the crank timing gear slides right onto the crank. No tapping required. Should it be tighter fit? I know the damper will probably tighten it up but still thought it would need a hammer to put it in place.

SBE 318 basic rebuild +CAM , INTAKE, HEADS, expectations?

If you are gonna keep it as is, there are .028 compressed thickness head gaskets that will help.. not a ton but every bit.. BTW.. buy the trick flow billet timing chain.. it's $100 and quality... not a spot to go cheap.

Coolant coming out of timing cover bolt hole

It is a timing chain tensioner. It allowed the block, timing chain and gears to not have to be very close in tolerance to fit well. IMHO it is a part design to fail. I have lost a timing chain due to parts falling into the path of the chain and the chain trying to ride over it. 4 banger Chevy...

2006 dodge 3.3 timing chain slop.

Put the new timing chain in. I know of the same loose timing chain issue on a caravan. Recommendation was only drive it back and forth to work 4 blocks away. Their kids took it on a road trip to Duluth MN on I-35w, 70+ miles per hour. Blew the timing chain half way there, had to leave the van...

    Would you reuse it?

...between 50k to 60k miles. I managed to get around 110k miles out of my 318 ('71 Satellite) before I changed it to a double roller timing chain. The nylon coated teeth on the original cam sprocket were worn virtually to a knife edge. Lots of slop in the chain and the timing mark would wander...

Question: What is the Best timing chain setup LA or Magnum

The way I understand it is install the timing set and check the slack if the chain has too much slack get a smaller chain. I believe they make them

Timing chain set for the street/driver?

I know this has been covered a bit, but I thought I’d ask for 2024: What is a good brand for a low to medium performance build timing set. I have a 90k 360 that likely has a nylon gear and needs gaskets. I’m not talking race, I mean 95% street driven or a truck-like application? Edelbrock...

    Where does this go?

Behind timing cover in front of chain on crankshaft. It's an oil slinger. You will have opinions for and against. Sometimes they are VERY close to the chain. I left mine off when rebuilding my 340. Personal preference

    Anyone know anything about Subarus?

Head gaskets are a common problem. Really simple engine and reliable when fixed right. A 2011 could be timing chain instead of a belt. Be careful that the heads are correct for car/engine.

Rough idle turned to crank then ka-thunk

Slanty's have timing chains. They actually use the same chain and crank sprocket as the big blocks (cam sprocket is different). The factory cam sprocket had nylon coated teeth. Most aftermarket replacement sprockets were not nylon. The heavy duty slants in some model trucks had double roller...

    Slow build 71 Scamp 440

Ok well I think it’s probably a good idea to order a timing chain set. I grabbed the Eddy 7804. It will be adequate and I can use what I saved to buy the Mancini rocker set.

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

I dunno, my old 340 ran better and better at top end as the chain wore. 'course, it got to the point that advancing the timing was the only way it would start. so, every nine months, it got a new chain.

Placement of big round felt pad on crank behind timing cover

Donut goes on back side of balancer if using it. The slinger(if u use it) goes inside the timing cover to sling oil on chain. Donut and slinger are 2 different locations.
