    340 X head date code

My 1968 340 X heads have dates codes of 09047 and 09187. I know the "7" is 1967. But I thought the preceding three numbers were supposed to be which day of the year (out of 365) they were cast. Obviously, that can't be. Is it the month and year? So Sept. 4 and Sept. 18?

    Transmission questions. Manual valve body?

You really shouldn't drive it anymore at all until you get the kickdown linkage set up (or switch to a manual valve body). As stated before, it will ruin your transmission. I know this from experience (young and dumb in the late 1980s is my excuse).

    What is this part called?

Thanks 4spd. The motor is a 68, but it's in a 72 RR and everything is orientated for a 72. Timing cover has timing marks on the driver's side, water pump has bottom hose on passenger side, etc. The balancer has been on the engine for three years and the dust shield was never an issue....until it...

    What is this part called?

Thanks 4spd. The original balancer is definitely NOT good. That's why I swapped to an aftermarket. Idiot me, thought the dust shield was supposed to transfer over, so I pulled it off and put it on the new balancer.

Thanks Brian. You posted right before my last post

    What is this part called?

Thanks Fawkes. Does that mean when someone uses an aftermarket balancer (which don't seem to come with the dust shield, at least mine didn't), they just run it without the dust shield and the large felt donut? I'm sure lots of guys use aftermarket balancers. Is the dust shield and felt donut...

    What is this part called?

Thanks 4spd. I have an aftermarket harmonic balancer and it didn't come with the part in question. So it's actually part of the factory balancer? That would explain why I can't find one. Mine definitely is not attached to the balancer

    What is this part called?

It's worn and cracked and I believe it is spinning -- when it should stay put -- and causing a bad squeal

    What is this part called?

Thanks. I have replacement felt donuts. But I need the piece it goes inside. What is that called?
  10. JG1966

    What is this part called?

What is the 4-inch wide, 1 inch tall circular metal "spacer" that goes between the timing chain cover and the harmonic balancer on a 68 340 called? It has the thick felt gasket inside it. Mine is mangled and I can't for the life of me find one. Mainly because I don't know what they called. Thanks

Small hole in head at bottom of valve cover bolt!

Thanks Bobzilla. This may seem like a dumb question but let's say I use sealant and leave the hole untouched. Does that hole affect the performance of that cylinder because the wall is not "smooth"

Small hole in head at bottom of valve cover bolt!

Thanks Yellow Rose. I do know it's been like that for a while and I've never had an issue (that I know of). I'm gonna do something, but nothing too complicated or something that could potentially make it worse.

Small hole in head at bottom of valve cover bolt!

That's exactly what I was going to do. Cut down a small bolt, put a notch in it and thread it down with red loctite. It won't go anywhere and no chance for it to enter the engine. I poked around with a small screwdriver and there's really no more material that can come off.

They are just a little dirty.

Small hole in head at bottom of valve cover bolt!

Thanks Mike. I repaired a tiny pinhole leak on the bottom of a gas tank with JB Weld once and it never leaked again. I'm very confident it would hold up, but I'm gonna explore my options. I'm in no hurry. I'm not getting motor back for at least a month

Small hole in head at bottom of valve cover bolt!

Thanks Dana. Some of these guys scared me so I removed all of the JB Weld before it cured. It's back to the way it was. And yes, I checked the valve cover bolt and it went just about all the way down (enough that the valve cover and gasket would more than make up the difference).

Small hole in head at bottom of valve cover bolt!

Thanks Rat Rod. I'm surprised the piece that came out before -- whenever that was -- somehow didn't mess things up.

Small hole in head at bottom of valve cover bolt!

Thanks Mike. I just put some JB Weld on it. Seems all good. Maybe it will improve my flow in that cylinder.

Small hole in head at bottom of valve cover bolt!

Thanks Rick. Is JB Weld designed to withstand semi-high temperatures? I have some in my hand right now but it doesn't really clarify it's tolerance to heat.

Small hole in head at bottom of valve cover bolt!

Thanks Mike. I have no idea how long it's been like that but it's never been an issue that I know of. Do you mean sealer on the valve cover bolt to keep everything inside the head or should I try to seal the hole?

Small hole in head at bottom of valve cover bolt!

Sorry. There are photos now. It posted before they downloaded.

Small hole in head at bottom of valve cover bolt!

I recently removed my 340 for some work and while going over the heads I noticed a small part of the intake runner on my left head (340 X heads) had been "punched out" along the side wall at the bottom of the valve cover bolt hole. The hole is about the size of a small pea. I assume somewhere...

Are A bodies more popular than B bodies?

I'm one. I have a 72 RR and no A body. But she's got a 340 and there are more small block discussions and experts over here (and I like to read about A bodies, too)

There is only one port on the carb, for manifold vacuum (plus another one under the secondary bowl for my pcv). There is no port for timed vacuum.

    40 degrees initial!

Thanks Ray. I was nice talking with you. I appreciated your help. I used a silver spring and a blue spring that I had laying around -- just to see where it put my curve -- and adjusted my mechanical timing from 18* to 16*. I'm now at 20 initial, 16 mechanical. My advance starts now at about 1100...
