    Metal in oil

I formulated automotive engine oils for Chevron for 18 years so I know a thing or three about oils. Engine oils are complicated mixtures of dispersants, detergents, antiwear additives, antioxidants, friction modifiers, antifoam agents and sometimes other components. Getting the formulation...

Need recommendation for a Carb for better MPG!

Way back in the late '70's, I put a 318 cam in my 340 with 10:1 compression, an SP2P manifold and the original 4425S Carter AVS. with 2.94 gears and 27" tall tires, I got 22-24 MPG. The car is as shown, a '68 Barracuda FB FS. I did convert to a desert cooler radiator and a 14" Flex-a-lite...

    Radiator/Engine temp questions

On my 340, draining the radiator allows access to the manifold fittings w/o leaking, but draining the block is required to access the timing chain cover if that needs replacing. The block drain plugs are most likely frozen in place so take the lower bolts off the TC cover and water will drain...

    Radiator/Engine temp questions

Keep in mind that the 70+ WP is 3/4" longer than the 69- pump, so pullies and alternator alignment are all different.

    Radiator/Engine temp questions

In 1976, I rebuilt my 340 for fuel economy due to the crude embargos and middle east tensions (sound familiar?). I used a 318 cam and stock compression (10.25:1), an SP2P manifold and really tuned the AVS for best fuel economy. I went to a 4 core OEM radiator and electric fan to replace the...

    Diff gear recommendations

My 340 FB FS came with 3:55 gears and they were perfect for all by long highway trips. I turned 13.48 @ 105.38 stock with 29" retread H70-14 tires. Cannot complain with launch but back then there was no 60 foot time measured. I had well over 350 runs on this car all in the mid 13's and never...

    Getting fed up...

The way the EPA is regulating emissions now, with a 90% further reduction in regulated emissions coming in 2027, there is no way ICE's will meet requirements. Thus forcing OEM's to produce hybrids and EV's only. We will soon become just like Cuba where the average car is 60 years old. Maybe...

    Spark plug reading

I consider leak down values within 10% of each other very good. There are many reasons for cylinders to show different leakage including variation in ring location and alignment which can change over time. The most important thing to listen for is valve leakage and then head gasket leakage...

The leakdown test shows your engine is very healthy, at least in Cyl #7. Congratulations.

    Correct initial position for distributor

RRR said: "It is beyond extremely rare for the distributor cam to wear, since the rubbing block is much softer. You do need to put some type of a good high temp grease on the cam, though. Don't glob it on, just a thin film." That reminded me of the LubriCam saying. "Less Lubricam Last Longer!"...

    Correct initial position for distributor

The photo below shows the FSM orientation of the distributor drive gear. The Rotor is directly in line with the slot so the rotor will point to the first intake manifold bolt on the driver's side. This will orientate the distributor so the vacuum advance canister clears the coil and oil...

    340 cam change

I ran a Mopar Performance 284/484 cam in my 340 and thought it was about right for all around performance. Great on the street with 18 MPG and turned 14.50's at Bandimere (5800 ft, and 8500 ft altitude corrected), so in the mid 13.50's at sea level. Timing is everything with the 340 (and with...

    headlight recommendation for my Duster

Way back in '76, I found these Ampilux halogen headlights for sale. I did a lot of night driving in the CA desert and wanted better lighting. These worked, but blew the headlight relay, no surprise. I built my own headlight relay system without cutting any of the original wiring so I could go...

    Very Confused!

The shop that restored my '68 FS FB put an O'Reilly alternator and VR on the car. It bounces between 15 and 16V essentially all the time. I replaced the VR with an older chrome unit I had, and it was more steady in the 14 to 15V range. I would prefer steady voltage, but not sure that is the...

What's your opinion on the slack in this 318 timing chain?

If the block was line-honed, the chain will have more slack than stock. But this looks fine. If worried, put a Mopar Perf chain tensioner on it. That will take up all the slack and keep the chain from whipping. Did it on all my 340's.

    Disc question

I used the '73 disk brake setup with pin-type calipers and 11.81" rotors from a '78 Cordoba. These were the reinforced rotors like Cop Rotors. Use the longer caliper bracket with the larger rotors and all is well. The brakes are fantastic compared to the KH 4-Piston original brakes, which...

340-4spDuster, thanks for the chart. Just got my '68 340 running and my plugs are about the OK to the left of Best. Running a 10.25:1 CR Sealed Power pistons with a 272° cam, RPM manifold and TQ carb. 12° initial advance and 34° total with vacuum advance operational. Timing line is about...

Alternator voltage regulator teardown and analysis

I just had my '68 340 Formula S restored and they used an 80 amp alternator with a Chinese made regulator. It bounces between 14 and 15 volts all the time. No steady output. I replaced the regulator with an old one I had, no markings on it, but the resistance between the two posts and ground...

My New Toy 1968 Barracuda Fastback Formula S

Yep, got about 350 miles on mine since restoration. Shakedown drives are great. Found a panel rattle that needs to be addressed, and the dash temp gauge just went bye bye. Alternator is bouncing between 14 & 15 V, so something isn't right. Back to the shop for a little TLC to fix things...

Life after Holley Sniper - back to Carb

I use a TQ with great success on my '68 Cuda. Once fuel is in the bowls (after sitting for a week or so), it starts instantly and idles at 500-700 RPM even 30 seconds after a cold start (well, cold start in summer isn't quite as cold as other times of the year!). What I found makes carbs work...

    Don’t Convert to R134a

In my view, Propane and Butane are as environmentally safe as a Tesla. One thing goes wrong and you have a BBQ you weren't expecting. Just to clarify a point, Propane and Butane are not Greenhouse Gases (GHG's) as they do not absorb infrared radiation and reflect it back to earth (at least...

I need education on the Thermoquad "staged accelerator pump" , that gives an additional shot when the secondaries open

Found the text for adding a vacuum advance port to a TQ without one (ELB and ESA versions) Adding vacuum advance port to ELB and ESA TQs: Many Lean Burn carburetors lack a vacuum advance port because advance was controlled by the ELB computer. The port may be added to provide a vacuum advance...

I need education on the Thermoquad "staged accelerator pump" , that gives an additional shot when the secondaries open

For sure my 9077S base has no vacuum advance port. But the upper part of the carb was by far the best I have, so I swapped bases with another carb and all was well. I just started driving my restored '68 FB FS 340 and got 16.67 MPH the first tank. This was not ideal driving as I was in...

I need education on the Thermoquad "staged accelerator pump" , that gives an additional shot when the secondaries open

Lemondana, The TQ was in the best shape I have seen for a use carb in a very long time. I got it from a junk yard in the early 1980's and saved it all these years. The accelerator pump plunger bore was pristine. I tried 3 different rubbler accelerator pumps before finding this leather one...

I need education on the Thermoquad "staged accelerator pump" , that gives an additional shot when the secondaries open

Just went through 3 rubber accelerator pumps that didn't work at all. Had a leather pump and it worked first time perfectly. Not sure why the rubber ones failed. I would have thought that they might work for a while until the ethanol (ugh) in the fuel caused them to swell, but they didn't...

How old are you and how long have you raced

In SoCal in the 1970's the issues were land value, mostly, and noise. People moved next to a dragstrip knowing it was there and then complained about what you did at the strip, make noise. Go Figure. Just like building housing next to an airport. People want low cost housing but that will...

How old are you and how long have you raced

I used to have Bandimere (Morrison, CO) near me, but that track shut down due to growth in the area. It was 35 miles away, so very convenient. There is talk of moving to a new location near the Denver airport, which would be fine with me as it is only 30 miles away. Fingers crossed for a 2025...

How old are you and how long have you raced

I started racing my '68 Barracuda Formula S in June 1969, when I got the car from the original owner in Long Beach, CA. I spend nearly every Wednesday night at the strip if I could and had 350 runs on the car the first two years. I am now 72 and still enjoy running my car, but Bandimere closed...
