Is there a large pipe plug near the heater hoses? That's usually the place for a mechanical temp gauge. And you can put hose adapters on that and have it inline on the heater hose.

I'd use that all day long over an aftermarket carb. Automatic choke, fast idle, etc. everything fits. Put a vacuum gauge on it first and see about how much idle vacuum it has. Adjust mixture screws for max vacuum.

You could just cut a gasket out of gasket paper if there is an area of overlap. Then your original plan of riveting it would work. I personally like the welded and seam sealed idea.
