    Early to Late Tailpipes

1967 and older have To answer your question. Left tailpipe is the same between early and late applications. 1967 and earlier with the transverse fuel tank strap requires a different tailpipe to clear the J-volt on the right hand side. The right tailpipe is approximately 3-1/2” lower in this...

Complete Manifold-Back Exhaust: Accurate vs TTi

How about posting a few pictures of that original 75% exhaust System you removed? The factory 1968 H code exhaust system was a one year only exhaust system that was pretty restrictive. Had about 34” of 2-1/4” pipe up front and the balance of the system in 2”. And then exiting through 1-5/8”...

    70 Dart exhaust tips

Yes you are correct 68/69 Barracuda and 70 Swinger have the lower valance which calls for a shorter exhaust tip and the upper hanger bracket is welded 4-1/2” from the exit end of the tip. Also if trying to install the incorrect longer tips you will find that the right tailpipe is too long as...

The wrong tips are installed. Should have the 9Bs which are 14” in length. The picture appears to have the 9As which are 18” overall length. The brackets are also located in different locations between the 9Bs and the 9As.

    2.5" exhaust vs 2.25 or even 2"

A body 383 or any other factory installed dual exhaust applications were not equipped with an h-pipe. 1968 383 GTS and Barracuda 383 dual exhaust were piped the same as the 1967 models which were quite restrictive. The flange pipes were 2.25” midway back where 2” tubing was welded in to...

    High performance manifold differences

Partially correct. Early manifolds had gaskets on both sides as stated. Later performance manifolds from 1971-74 used a gasket on the left side as the early manifolds and a ball joint connection/floating flange connection on the right side requiring no gasket. The right manifold (626 casting)...

What size head pipes and tail pipes used on the factory '68 340?

The 1968 340 Darts and Barracudas were equipped with 2” headpipes and 1-7/8” tailpipes. In 1969 they changed to 2 1/4” headpipes except for the left flange pipe which was 2” for about 18”. The tailpipes were also 2-1/4” out of the mufflers and then changing to 1-7/8” about halfway back. Hope...

What size head pipes and tail pipes used on the factory '68 340?

The real dimensions are as described above for 1969 models with exhaust tips. These specs are taken from original assembly line components that we have in stock and confirmed by numerous catalogs such as Arvin Industries that actually produced these parts for Chrysler. My guess would be that if...

What size head pipes and tail pipes used on the factory '68 340?

Head pipes were 2.25” except around the starter where the flange pipe is 2” for clearance purposes. The left 2” flange pipe was dented severely to clear the starter and torsion bar which was quite restrictive. The tailpipes were 2.25” halfway back and then downsized to 2” and then down sized...

    Drilling Holes In Mufflers

Many muffler manufacturers today use what they call "internal drainage" technology. The internals are designed to allow the muffler to heat more uniformally and discipate moisture out the endcaps without much notice or exhaust leakage as a drain hole may cause. Seems to have worked quite well...

    340 exhaust question

You probably have a 623 casting which will be the easiest to pattern a pipe to and is correct for 71 newer 340 a-body. This also will allow oil filter clearance when not using the 90 degree adapter. Surprisingly the 623 casting flows almost as well as the earlier 68-70 340 manifold.
